Headlights not coming on

Just bought the van yesterday. It's an '99 Astro.

With the van off, the parking lights come on when the selector is turn to the parking light position. Then when continueing to turn the selector the headlights don't turn on.

With the van on, the headlights come on when the selector is turned to the parking light position. The headlights go out when the selector is turned to the headlight selection.

The high beam is not working either.

The previous owner had new headlights put on because of them glazing. Could they have screwed something up then? Also, a remote start has been installed and I'm wondering if they screwed up wiring then.

Any ideas on what I should check first?

Finally!!! Been waiting for your post announcing the purchase.

Check to make sure the fuses are good, an that the harness to the bulb is correctly installed. You could need a new switch though.

Happy trails.

Someone with more electrical experience will chime in soon.

I haven't looked to much into my issue yet, but it's there, waiting to be dealt with.

So, I don't use the parking break that often and did the other night. Found out the headlights go out when the parking break is engaged. I know the daytime running lights are supposed to do this, but not when the headlights are selected.

Also, is the headlight beam supposed to be brighter than the daytime running light beam?

I'm also having a flicker in all of the lights; interior and exterior.

Who should I take the van to? Auto shop, or a stereo installation shop? If it was the jack-ball's crazy wiring of the remote start, then I thought a specialty shop may be the way to go. Who's going to be cheaper?

Try watching the headlights from the front while you have someone else put it in gear. If they come on when the transmission is put in gear (will brighten from DRLs), then have them toggle the dimmer switch to see if it does its job. Sounds like your ride has automatic headlights, but the manual switch is likely bad.
