V8 into my 95 2WD

It's 2:00 AM, and I just read through the first 10 pages in the V8 forum. Nothing I read seemed to clarify my thought process. I found a complete van at PnP toda... yesterday. It's is a 1995 G20 conversion van. PnP got it from an auction here: http://www.autobidmaster.com/carfinder-online-auto-aucti...

Re: 95 Safari V-8 Swap

ZOMBIE THREAD ALERT!!! 9 years later, 2:00 AM, and here I am researching V8 swaps looking for answers to the questions I have and for questions I don't yet know I'll have. So far it looks like I'm cutting the support, the neighbors and the city would have a cow if I raised the van high enough to pul...

Re: What have you done to/with your van today?

Went to 2 yards with my wife today (and she's not a wrenching woman) looking for an engine, while at the second yard my brother offered me a cab plus 4WD Chevy truck he no longer needs. I'm thinking I'll take him up on that offer, that'll keep things moving and take the pressure off. I think I'm goi...

Re: 95 intermittent bogging/backfiring/power loss

While my wife and I were at the second yard looking for an engine, my brother called. He's getting rid of a 4x4 cab plus Chevy truck he no longer needs. Looks like I'll be driving that before too long. I am still looking into putting a v8 in the van. I think it will be better suited to me than a tru...

Re: 95 intermittent bogging/backfiring/power loss

The only think I can think of is I was too aggressive with the throttle during and after the seafoam. I changed the oil after the intake gaskets, even though i didnt see a single drop of coolant when i took it apart.

Re: 95 intermittent bogging/backfiring/power loss

Marla Gibbs is right... 5 lemonades and halfway through a margarita this is looking like a possibility. Maybe. Nothing's off the table yet. I like the idea of not assuming more debt for something that only sees 2K miles per year.

Re: 95 intermittent bogging/backfiring/power loss

you know EXACTLY What buttons to push, that's for sure! Buddy who runs a body shop just texted me saying it would be fun.

It would be cheaper in the long run than a payment and no property tax is a bonus, right?

Re: 95 intermittent bogging/backfiring/power loss

Not unless it does one hell of an impression of a spun bearing, complete with knocking and squeaking upon deceleration.

Convince me to put a V8 in it... it's not beyond my skillset, just my desire to wrench.

Re: 95 intermittent bogging/backfiring/power loss

It is what it is. I'll assess it tomorrow when there's no more hard lemonade in me (4 so far), but I have a feeling I'm trading in the Dart I didn't want for something I can get in and out of and tow a camper with. Sadly, it doesn't look like it's going to be an Astro. Not unless I can find a 12 yea...

Re: CONVERSION VAN BUCKET SEATS

Look at the mounting pedestals. If the holes in the floor are the same, they should fit. I have Jeep seats mounted on top of Astro pedestals. Comfy, and they sit a little higher than stock. I also have seats from a PT Cruiser I've mounted on shorter bases from a conversion van. They sit lower, but t...

Re: 95 intermittent bogging/backfiring/power loss

Got the radiator hose, finished the radiator flush/filled with green Prestone, changed the oil, and found that when heated up it still backfired. I did something controversial that I'd always had good luck with in the past... until today. I bought a can of seafoam. After sitting on the sie of the ro...

Re: 95 intermittent bogging/backfiring/power loss

I blinked. You're right about the 9 hour days turning into 6, and while it IS depressing, it still beats the alternative.
Off to FLAPS and Ollies this morning.

Re: What have you done to/with your van today?

Somehow I never associated NYC with DIY automotive, My hat is off to you. My first engine swap was nights after work, on Long Island, in the street, in the dark, in the snow. I took out a 350, installed a 250, and had no clue what I was doing. WTH was I thinking? lol

Re: 95 intermittent bogging/backfiring/power loss

Thanks! When did old happen? Wasn't long ago this would have been an afternoon's project. I don't move like I once did. I came inside and never did go to the FLAPS for the hose and the rear compressor seals/refrigerant. If I'm on a roll, I might as well roll with it and see about getting the AC work...

Re: 95 intermittent bogging/backfiring/power loss

IT RUNS!!!   I had to reseat the injector plug, but once I finished it fired right up. It still surges a bit intermittently, but it's a LOT better than it was. I also need to replace the upper radiator hose, it's leaking at the thermostat. Bonus: I HAVE HEAT!!! Just in time ...

Re: 95 intermittent bogging/backfiring/power loss

I have no problem soldering and heat shrinking. I'm hoping the connector just popped loose. Either way, I'm going back in.

Re: 95 intermittent bogging/backfiring/power loss

argh... I had to walk away from it. I have a fuel delivery problem. Getting ready to take a meter to the injector leads. There's no priming procedure for the new injector, right? edit: I noticed one of the pins on the injector was bent a little, I thought I had a good connection. Old injector reads ...
