Can't CLOSE liftgate

Can't CLOSE liftgate

Postby Astrocross [OP] » February 17th 2017, 3:29am

So, I searched, but didn't find anything relevant. The liftgate latches released so I could open it, but then when I tried to close it, they don't latch. The gate just bounces off the seals.

Any ideas? Maybe check the fuse that releases the latch? I need to get a new rear window seal, so water gets in. Maybe the latch worked once, then shorted the fuse?

Does it sound like it does when you press the button? Look at the ends where it actually latches on both sides, are the latches retracted?

Yeah, the latch levers are there and they move out of the way when the pins hit, they just don't latch, even if I press them in by hand. Seems it should be mechanical, but acting electrical. Checking the fuse tonight, but hoping someone has seen it.

Do they move smoothly? Have you lubed them up at all?

Yeah, they're smooth and I can get the hatch all the way to flush, just won't stay there.

If they aren't retracted, then it's not an electrical problem. If they are lubed and moving smoothly, then it's an alignment problem.

It's definitely a weird one. I hear the release working electrically, but even if I push the latch all the way in by hand, it doesn't latch. I see a sliding sensor or switch on each side. Maybe the system has to be confident the door is in position before it will latch?

That is for the lights. The latches are spring loaded, and will automatically catch.

You hear the release working electrically when you are not pressing the button?

Got it. The release linkage needs lubrication. If it doesn't return on its own, the latches are left pushed open. Latches are fine, the catch in the linkage is out of position.
