Cargo vs. Passanger Van

Cargo vs. Passanger Van

Postby rlepperson [OP] » June 5th 2009, 3:49pm

I am debating whether to purchase an Astro cargo or passenger van to convert into a camper. It seems to me that there is more space for shelving and to camping unnoticed in a cargo van. At the same time, I have read that passenger vans have more amenties (CD players, leather seats, etc.) than cargo vans. Any suggestions?

Go with the passenger, like you said you get all the creature comforts. Most cargo vans only have am radio, vinyl basic seats, no air, no side window, no rear carpet (makes them noisy) and they usually cost more to boot. Weird.

Get a passenger van you can always pull the seats out and it would probably re-sale easier. I would stay away from the conversion vans as the seats in them have to be un-bolted instead of just pulling the release handles and pulling the heavy seat out of the channels.

It's really gonna come down to what you want more. The cargo is definitely nicer for building cabinets and bedding that doesn't block windows, but the passenger starts off with a nicer interior. What might work nice would be getting a cargo and finding someone parting out a passenger and grabbing the interior from it.

I have a 99 Cargo that I use for camping, I love it! No windows on either side, just the two on the back windows that have a dark tint. That would be the only issue I see with a passenger van is all the windows.... kinda hard to have some privacy with a half a dozen windows. Unless you like curtains.

I like having my windows to see traffic and they are handy when backing up.
