Wondering if I would be able to mount a rain gutter roof rack into this channel?

it originally had a hard plastic piece in it to fill it but I really have no clue why its even there, must be a manufacturing thing, maybe to remove the roof to add a raised roof or something.

So a rain gutter rack system wouldn't clip into it?

That's a negatory ghost rider.

Also. I think your van was at some point white.

Whoever repainted it never put the moulding channels back in.

My guess.

Haha yeah it was, it was used in a movie to look like a beat up old van. They definitely did a good job making it look like that! Perfect candidate for a stealth camper conversion. Any negatives of the moulding channels not being there?

Also, brings up my next question. Is there anyway to install roof racks in these vans without drilling into the roof?

My 89 hasn't had anything in the channels since at least the 10+ years that I've owned it.

No way to mount a rack without drilling that I've ever heard of.

The channels are where the roof sheetmetal is attached to the side sheetmetal - if you look closely, you can see the lime of spot-welds.... This takes the place of the old school rain gutters that stuck out around the roof....

The plastic moldings are just there to hide it (and keep it from accumulating acorns and birds from getting their feet stuck in it and what-not)

Okay I gotcha. Well that is a bit of a bummer, I was hoping I could use those channels to mount a rack. The lip on either side makes it seem possible, but oh well. On the hunt for a cheap, but good quality rack that's simple to install now! Thanks everyone for the replies!

Here's what they used to look like:

829
Image
The 1996 Vans had this flat wide rubber "Seal Molding" glued down to cover and pretty up the roof line - as prev. mentioned.

830
Image
Here's the Pass. side.

The Gen I Vans had a narrower, different style of Molding. I just replaced both of my Gen Is with Gen IIs. Look MUCH nicer.

By the way - These roof racks that came with the Vans - might be an option for you at the JY, maybe. Or do you need a rack - That you can actually use? And Yes = they ALL go thru the roof.

But... I bet there is some SUPER Epoxy that would work with the right pads, etc. Just a thought.

I just need a rack to put a cargo box and a couple of surfboards on, so nothing crazy.

Drill holes. Not difficult. Not expensive. I wouldn't want to risk losing my surfboards or anything else with...anything else. You can hard mount "rain gutter adaptors" and then mount any of the dozens of kinds of Yakima or other rack systems to those. Then if you don't want the hardware up there in the off season, just remove it and leave the low profile brackets till next journey.

And then there is the "Old School Suction Cup , Strap and Bracket / Window Header" style.

No drilling - no permanence - no fuss. AND... no Epoxy.

Mike

ps: I DO STILL wonder about some of these new "Super Adhesives" and their ratings, tensiles and integrity.
