Buying advice needed.. $875 AWD Astro 235k

Postby zimp132 [OP] » May 12th 2017, 6:26pm

Found a rare non rusted out Astro with 235k miles for $875 about an hour away I am going to look at tomorrow. Would love any advice..

More info: Owner says "Radiator new at 233000, along w/ upper rad hose, alternator at 207000, along w/idler pulley, tranny at 186000. AC Works, good for it's age - could probably use a recharge. Just to let you know that the "service engine" light does not go out. It registers that something is out of spec with the catlytic converter. We put a direct fit, after market one on, and according to any online forum any aftermarket will cause this. Oil was changed 1500 miles ago. Rust-The only thing I know of is on the rocker panels, under the plastic. No visible rust."

That is because imgur sucks ;) They just make it a bit more difficult, because they want you to visit their site.

My kind of deal if there aren't rust issues.

Thanks for fixing the image links! I typically look for rust around the frame, what would you look for?

If it runs and drives well, then at that price who cares?! Buy it, love it, drive it into the ground.

If the cat is new, then it probably needs oxygen sensors.

Looks pretty damn good for $875.

And no, using an aftermarket cat won't set a code. My '99 and '02 both have aftermarket cats with no problems - and so did my '93 Bravada (same 4.3L V6). Putting them in turned OFF the code.

Probably needs the MAF cleaned and a tuneup - because cats don't die, they're killed - and new oxygen sensors. And only get Denso, NTK or AC Delco. Bosch sensors will set a code new out of the box.

I'd be taking a good look at all the underbody plumbing. Brake and fuel lines etc. Etc. Even though it's cheap if the brake or fuel lines are rotted that's a time consuming repair.

Look closely at the front subframe mounts or as some have called radiator support mounts. I have a 1995 I paid $700 for to tide me over until I swap out my sub frame to AWD sub frame in my 2001 2wd. But the 95 has rotted out front mounts they make noise and I guess affect steering as the body sub frame shifts?? makes it interesting to drive.
If I really wanted to I could possibly take the front assy off the 99 I have and have it welded in. too much work for me.
The 95 runs real good heat and ac work ok radio works ok seats are comfortable all I need for now. If you look at my gallery I took some photos of the front with drive train removed you may see more clearly the front body mount area.
Anyhow you got a nice looking machine.
The 95 I bought for $700 I think at 253,000 miles is a great deal even the included rattles.

The down side of that is you don't know how far that rust has gone under the plastic, mine was pretty bad when I pulled the cladding off, it went pretty far up the outer panel.

That cladding will hide a LOT!
