Not yet. However I have been taking detailed pictures from the very start and will have a build thread in August. Right now I have a 2 week deadline for a trip. Everything is back out yesterday, furring strips in. Next ez cool floor insulation, sub floor trace to vinyl floor, punch holes for holes to t-nuts, subfloor in, bolts, lap sealant around edge, vinyl adhesion around perimeter, bolt down cabinetry and 80/20 battery box/bench, bed, water tank (20 gal), water to outside shower and inside sink, all wiring and fuse box, etc

Hah, Thanks--put an enormous amount of time and craftsmanship into it! Every hour I'm not at work I'm trucking away.

All that matters to me is the A/C!

But my wife and I do also sleep on a full size bed mattress, and have an outdoor pop-up canopy.
I rig a strong temporary storage shelf over the bed, just in the back of van only (no photo)

Here's a recent "camping" photo from the "44th Van Nationals" in Lakeland, Fl

Hey All,

I just joined but I have been reading a lot. Love the ideas and the information. I recently purchased a 2003 Chevy Astro AWD. One thing that puts this van apart is that one of the previous owners added a roof top shell. My wife can stand up without her head hitting the ceiling. It was unfinished, ugly fiberglass. I glued reflectix, then some carpet on top of that. I haven't finished trimming it yet but it looks better.

I wracked my brain as to how I to make a bed. So I took some measurements and went to my Computer.

The box I built so far. I will be making 24" full extension drawers in each opening for either the work mode as it is now or camping mode. Camping mode will have stove on left (or right) cooler in center and water on the right. It will be a modular setup that I can take out of the drawer and place on a table, like a chuck box.

I'll have more pics up soon.

I'd like to see some exterior photos of the van. That fiberglass top looks huge from the inside.

Not sure if this is the right place/appropriate/allowed, but before I found I could I can get my 95 running fine again I was looking for others used (and sort of have kept glancing), and came across some camperized ones that look sorta cool on craigslist. So these are all stolen pictures (because links will soon die), not mine, etc.

I'm in Alaska, and note that now and then 'end of the road' versions are for sale (= from foreigners flying back to Deutschland et al. after the big trans-America tour, or the one below from one who drove it here to work seasonally and seems to be abandoning it to fly home, etc.)

So mods, let me know if verboten, but I think they add a little bit to this thread - shoot, maybe they've even been here already!

So this one's up now:
'2001 Chevy Astro camper - $2000'
http://anchorage.craigslist.org/cto/5784827674.html
Used this van to drive from Jersey to denali where I worked for the summer and now I'd like to get rid of it for cheap before I leave alaska on the 1st of October. The van has a bed and bamboo floor and a pullout table. It runs great, oil changes every 3000 miles, has been owned by my family forever. The car is really worth more but I'd like to get rid of it to let someone else have fun with it. I can also meet you anywhere in alaska. Contact me with questions.

What really got me was the hardwood floor (!, ok, bamboo not hardwood, but wow cool!), and the xmas lights! Two ideas for a modern hippy van!

That no-headliner might get loud though (maybe the reason they won't drive it back the 400 miles!? - that or it can't be too warm in the autumn/winter...)

And good photography, at least it makes it look yuuuuuuge! inside.

Unless I get yelled at I think I also saved and can post the one from the Krauts who drove across the USA and were flying back.

PS- mine's just a regular 'SLT' version with the last seat out, but have camped/tripped much in it; probably won't do much but some of the ideas on this thread are great...

Welp,
I got one foot wet on my journey to camperizing the Safari today. Yanked most of the rear interior, carpet and pad. The carpet was so gross I went through a whole bottle of OxyClean.
But Wait! There's more!
I found some mexican pesos in the seat attachment wells, a half a cup of sludge, and tons of ladies hair pins... I lightly prepped and installed the off brand Dynamics's Mat to the floor and made good progress on the walls until I ran out of light, patience, and beer this evening.

More to come....

So I yanked out the rear AC unit today because I wanted to utilize the space. I guess I'm going to need to search the forum and find a clever way to isolate the front system now that I've opened it up.

Thank You, she's got some dings here and there. But overall pretty good considering the age and all the original body panels are there. Really fun to drive.

Junk yard grab the manifold and hoses from a front A/C van. One bolt on the back of the compressor. And 2 screw on deals at the ends of the hoses.

There are a few manifold types tho. Take the compressor end off first and look is it level or stepped where it mates to the compressor. Just look at yours before you go shopping.
