reverse folding bench seat

Re: reverse folding bench seat

Postby timelessbeing [OP] » May 6th 2009, 3:04am

I found someone getting rid of seats out of a 97 Astro. I really want these so I can use the base to built a sectional bed. My questions is will they drop right into my van? In other words, is the floor socket configuration the same for all Astros?

It was an option in the old full sized Beauville vans that the third seat could fold out into a bed. It had a second seat back behind the standard seat back, when unfolded it had three seat sections then. It was killer!

I never had one in my Beauvilles though. Man those regular seats were big and heavy!

Wonder if one would squeeze into an Astro?

I picked up a pair of bench seats, identical to mine, in great shape. FREE from craigslist this morning. My plan is to use the framework to build storage boxes which double as a removable sectional bed that drops into the floor sockets. Maybe I will even reuse the foam because it should be durable stuff. I'll try to post pics of my progress.

The seat project was abandoned. Using the seats is too complicated, and not ideal. I'm just going to use wood to build it, and it's going to slide in and out.

I'm going to be starting my interior project fairly soon.

I took some measurements to help with the design.
I posted them in the forum INTERIOR section in case anyone else interested:
viewtopic.php?f=13&t=6992

I am envisioning a plywood box that is removable and slides in between the wheel wells. The top will be on hinges so you can open it to put things inside, or unfold it all the way to make a bed. The flap will rest on the middle bench folded down, or fold-out legs if there's no bench.

What about something along the lines of a Futon couch/bed.

Sounds complicated. I was aiming for simple. :P

We'll see how it works. I may decide to improve on it in the future.

it's funny that you mention CL because there was a posting a while ago for a free bench seat around here that folded into a bed... i wanted to pick it up and mount it somewhere between the stock second and third row seating... i was running around for a while with the second seat removed, but having a 4 year old that far away got too complicated, and having the seat in the middle isn't enough room behind the front seats... i'm going to have to look at my local pick-a-part for a conversion seat...

My van is a conversion, so I don't have a conventional bench to look at, but one idea that would be simple IF it's doable, would be to reverse the hinges on the bench, swapping them from side to side.
The design of some folding benches would permit this, but I'm not sure about the one in an astro.
Take a peek and see if it might work.

i'm probably going to try to find either a big non rocking lazy boy or a love seat for the back of mine so that i can take naps at work, stock 88 seats look okay but the lack of recline hurts my back.

I shrunk my design a whole bunch. This should made it more "manageable", make better use of plywood sheets, and give me more headroom.

I just need to figure out a good system for supporting the leafs.

Re: reverse folding bench seat

Postby jamestkirk » June 19th 2010, 10:13pm

wow, this thread started in 2008 and there are very few resolutions to this problem. well, here's yet another link that i've posted to a website that seems to be one stop shopping for my campervan build. http://www.discountvantruck.com/rvvansofas/princessvansofabeds.htm

Image

this is a spendy option for a fully flat foldown seat. this model is 52" wide and they won't make anything shorter, i asked. now, that takes up all of my room for cabinetry on the sides. but the legs are 47" apart, so if i slide it all the way to one side and modify the legs to boost it higher so that the bottom of the cushion fits above the wheel well i can get some cabinet clearance on the drivers side. it will fold flat and i will have a fold down bed extension that will sit in the rear of the van.

if anybody has found a cheaper resolution to this problem i'm all eyes and ears- kirk out
