Need pictures of rear weatherstrips on dutch doors

Postby janbon [OP] » April 8th 2015, 8:37am

Hi,

Yes, I too have problems with the rear weatherstrips for the dutch doors. So much in fact that I decided to remove the strips on the two doors. They were completely soaked with water, just like sponges and rust has begun appearing where the strip meets the body. Also my lift gate weatherstrip is bent so it is not working either.

However, now I realize that the original parts have been discontinued.... :banghead:

15751726 lift gate weather-strip has been discontinued.
15047000 passenger side rear door weather-strip has been discontinued
15046999 driver side rear door weather-strip.

So, I inquired at Metro Moulded Parts if they had any generic replacements that I could use. They were very open to try and find a solution and asked me to provide pictures of the original strips in place.... This is where I need your help, could someone please take some pictures as per below and provide them to me? Maybe this could result in a shopping list that could help other Astro owners with wet feet.

"If you could provide us with detailed photographs of one door seal and the lift-gate seal as they sit in the vehicle, along with close-up photos of any detail areas (such as molded corners) that will be helpful.

What is particularly important is to have close-up images of the ends of the two seals (door and lift-gate) with some dimensional reference like a tape measure or ruler in the photos.

If the seals are off the vehicle, the ideal plan would be for you to ship them to us (we’ll reimburse your cost) so we can examine them in detail."

Maybe this could result in a shopping list that could help other Astro owners with wet feet?

My gen II has barn doors, just bumping to keep you up top.

If you don't get a gen II owner to help out I'll post up my first gen.

Excellent Meterpig, thanks. Could I trouble you for a pic from the bottom of the doors as well? The strips make a turn on the bottom that I would like to show as well.

I realize this post has some age to it.....my seals are crap. Arizona has given 'em a beating. Any resources for barn door seals? Haven't considered this project yet, however, its on the list.

Steele Rubber Products should have it. I linked to this in a previous thread about sliding door strips http://www.steelerubber.com/door-weatherstrip-70-3256-72

If you can't find what you are looking for on their site, call them. They have stuff for most old cars or know what will work. They are one of the "go-to" places for weather strip / rubber for collector cars, hot rods, and most other vehicles.

According to the GM parts listings, the weatherstrip is the same for 1992-2005:

WEATHERSTRIP. End Gate Top and Bottom
WEATHERSTRIP,L/GATE. Required: 01
For: LM1 LIFT GATE(E54) (1992-2005) (2000 - 2005).

BTW, it can take years for something to be brought to market by Metro if they decide to proceed. They will also need a sample for the molded ends and to know where to stamp holes for the retaining pins (if applicable). They produced some cargo door moldings for '71-'77 Mopar vans after a few people inquired, but it was at least two years in the making IIRC.

The top "channel" piece of weatherstrip is almost always the start of leaks, especially after the w-strip becomes compressed and dirt, etc. starts to build up inside. Keeping that piece washed and clean inside will help prevent leaks, as will making sure the upside down U-shaped piece of w-strip around the liftgate is fully glued to the body around its full circumference.

I found out that the top channel riveted piece of weatherstriping is the same regardless of doors. Barn or dutch style doors its the same.
