Rattling/Rumbling sound from rear

Rattling/Rumbling sound from rear

Postby Astrodawn [OP] » March 14th 2017, 12:32am

A few years ago, my van started rattling terribly from the back (near the sliding door?) when idling and accelerating at low speeds.

A few weeks ago, it stopped.

Now it's been replaced by a low rumbling that happens under the exact same circumstances as the rattling. sometimes it's barely audible, but it's been happening more often and at higher decibels recently.

Is this something I should be concerned about?

[also i'm just guessing this should be in exhaust cause it seems like an exhaust thing. it's certainly exhausting to think about soooo]

Probably rust/ exhaust related, someone will be along shortly...

Tailpipes are notorious for rattling... same for mufflers. The low rumble may just be a crack or hole in the exhaust system or muffler, probably from the rattling.

Just a guess...

Check your mounts for the tailpipe also.

As a temporary fix on mine I put a hose clamp on on, then of course I neglected to correct it until it fell off and started rattling. Put a rubber mount on it and it fixed my rattle.

this may be a stupid question (i ask a lot of these), but why does the exhaust rattle only under certain circumstances (i.e. why would it rattle only when idling)?

Uh... why haven't you crawled under there while it's idling to see where it's coming from? Take a pair of gloves and handful of rags and start feeling around.

The 6's are popcorn poppers. They are very rough idling. Once they are at a higher RPM the cylinder pulses are closer together and it is smoother. Smack around on the exhaust. and lower body panels. Where the plastic cladding is. That cladding is loose all along the bottoms. That will make a racket bouncing against the side of the body.

When mine did this - and only when idling - it was the heat shield above the muffler/tailpipe. The pop welds popped and it was hanging down on the pipe.

I put it back up with 2 self-tapping screws, been silent since.

Just thought I'd give my :2: I found a rattling on my 97 astro and it was the aluminum heat/splash guard that was the culprit. It's right above the exhaust just behind the sliding door and one of the anchors had come loose. You could either get new anchors or remove it. Just something to check.

I used to have a hard mount welded between the body metal and my exhaust. At a certain RPM it was like the pre-chorus on a dance-trance song. Raise it 20 RPMs and it's back to 1960s library quiet.

Cut the steel, replaced with rubber trucker's load straps that several here said would fail within eleven minutes. They're still just fine 109 years later.

... :obscene-buttred:

Grab it and shake it.

You COULD just let it go a "few years" - will probably work itself out.
