Postby Mr Bones [OP] » March 14th 2011, 10:21pm

Will the Vapor Canister Purge Valve being bad or leaking cause the P0440 Evap code? And yes i put a new gas cap and the code came back :screaming:

the shop did the smoke test today and i have a bad leak on the top of my fuel tank so it got to come out to be fixed. Does any here have pictures of the top a 2000 to 2005 fuel tank i can use as a reference?

This was a fun job.I ran my fuel tank under E you would think there will only be two or three gallons of gas right? and it would not weigh that much so i took off the straps let down the jack and try to grab a hold of it and weigh a ton  so i get it out and take out the fuel pump out and there like 5 or 6 inches of gas in it  so i empty it out so i can clean it and there was 11.1/2 gallons in the tank. So is that right ? or is my sending assembly bad?

sounds like it.When I did my fuel pump when it said empty tank was pretty much empty.Barely any in it sloshing around.Never measured it but i doubt there was more than a couple gallons.when you looked in you could just see some at the bottom.

It's advised to not let these vans run under a 1/4 because the fuel pumps use the fuel to help cool them.So it might be a benefit to you the way the float is set that you didn't know about until now. When I did my fuel pump I too had about 1 1/4 gallons left at E.I don't think you would want it set so E is E if you where stuck somewhere trying to get to the gas station.I don't know for sure, but I would think GM sets those floats for alittle reserve.

That would be a problem. The 97-99 Astro/Safari has a 25 gallon tank. You have a 27 gallon tank. I assume the dimensions are different, because that shouldn't make E be 11½ gallons...but it's also possible the sender has the sulphur coating on it. GM has fuel injection cleaner that claims to clean off those sulphur deposits and prevent them from coming back and now Techron claims to clean off the sulphur deposits as well.

I know this topic is old but speaking of the reserve level in the tank....a previous poster was right about a reserve.
My Wife is an expert on this as she runs her tank on friggin empty all the time, almost every time.
She claims she can get an extra 18-20 miles once the low fuel light comes on.
Now if I can just get her to fill up at 1/4 tank level it would be a minor victory.

I am going to watch HER replace the next fuel pump!
