Postby tedanderson » January 26th 2010, 3:40pm

the guy in the parts shop at my local GM dealer said the last 8 digits are needed to tell which kind of transmission my van used, even though it used the 4l60e like i had told him. why would there be a difference based on the last eight?

I know that I am quoting an old post but for the benefit of anyone else reading this who might have the same question, the last set of numbers is also used to cross reference factory installed parts that might have come from different suppliers. That way if there is a known variation between certain suppliers or if there was a minor quality control issue that has an easy fix, it makes certain problems easier to identify. I once worked in a factory that manufactured clutch discs and pressure plates for the Corvette and the Camaro (amongst other makes and models). But this was one of 5 other plants in the US manufacturing these parts. So somewhere on the 33rd floor of the General Motors building in Detroit, some bean counter knows that the cars with vin numbers ending in 19202 thru 24399 were delivered with clutch discs that came out that particular factory.

Re: AstroSafari VIN Decode

Postby SerJ1000 » January 26th 2012, 2:03pm

Hi all, I have a '95 Astro conversion, UK registered and im trying to register it in another country. The reg office checked the van and said they could only find the VIN in the usual place on the dash but they couldnt locate it anywhere on the body. They said with US cars they often dont put the VIN on the body, just on the dash. Does anyone know if the VIN is also located somewhere on the body/engine etc? I dont want to spend €100 for them to put another VIN plate on it if they just missed it... Thanks so much

Excellent info. I have 236K miles on my '99 and have replaced everything but the engine and rear end. This was a Florida vehicle the body is solid. I'll keep maintaining it till the body goes away.

We could probably compare the suspension components in a full sized C10 and C20, then see if we could build a 3/4 Astro. Are the actual axles and diff's any different? Or is it just brakes, shocks, springs? Plenty of people have put 1 ton discs on the front of astros. I'd bet I've got 3/4 or better worth of springs and shocks on mine, front and rear. What makes a truck a higher rated tonnage?

Springs. What the truck will hold in weight. There is a rating system, I don't know it off the top of my head.

Brakes are the same. They do have upgrades but they do not effect the rating. Untill you move up in truck class, To say flatbeds, farm trucks serious heavy duty stuff. Big stuff. Brakes that come standard, naturally match the truck.

Re: AstroSafari VIN Decode

Postby Phantom » June 27th 2012, 3:51am

As far as the Automotive & Truck Industry standards in ratings are concerned ,, it involves both front and rear suspension , steering and braking capabilities ..not just springs as it is a safety matter of IF said vehicle has Stability in steering , braking , maneuverability in keeping with the standards of safety ,,

there is a big difference in a truck that has added springs to help with a heavy load and a truck that has been designed and tested at Highway speeds for safety ..
just because a truck has added springs and is now able to hold a heavy load without sagging does not mean it is safe to drive it at the exceeded load limit at highway speeds and be considered safe , a heavy weight can throw off a vehicles center of gravity if it was designed to carry 1000 lbs , but now carries 1500 or 2000 lbs ,,,that is why there is load ratings for various trucks , they have to pass safety tests
