First Tow

First Tow

Postby CaptMike02 [OP] » January 23rd 2017, 4:55pm

I have a 19' Hurricane SunSport deck boat. I think it's about 3000 pounds give or take depending on how it's loaded up. I have the tow package on my 2000 Astro with the Mark III conversion (and loving it). It towed the boat great! pulled it out without any tire slip at all, I was very impressed...

What actually does the tow/haul switch do?

Thanks
Mike

The tow/haul button changes shift points and increases internal fluid pressures in trans for faster/hard shift points, so it doesn't slide between gears. It also causes the torque converter to stay locked up and engaged longer despite additional applied throttle pressure. The main purpose is to keep converter locked up more consistently while towing.

From the owner's manual:

Tow/Haul Mode
The tow/haul mode is a feature that assists when pulling a heavy trailer. The purpose of the tow/haul mode is:
- to reduce the frequency of shifts when pulling a heavy trailer.
- to provide the same shift feel when pulling a heavy trailer as when the vehicle is unloaded.
- to reduce the need to change throttle position when pulling a heavy trailer.
This feature is turned on or off by pressing a button on the column shift lever. When the feature is on, a light on the instrument panel will illuminate to indicate that the tow/haul mode has been selected.
See “Tow/Haul Mode Light” in the Index. The tow/haul mode is automatically turned off each time the vehicle is started.
The tow/haul mode is most effective when the vehicle and trailer combined weight is at least 75% of the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) and the maximum trailer weight rating for the vehicle. See “Gross Vehicle Weight Rating” and “Trailer Weight” in the Index.
The tow/haul mode for hauling a heavy trailer is most useful under the following conditions:
- When driving through hilly terrain at speeds below 55 mph (88 km/h).
- When driving in low speed or stop and go traffic below 55 mph (88 km/h).
- When driving in parking lots.
Operating in the tow/haul mode when not pulling a heavy trailer will not cause damage to the vehicle, but you may experience reduced fuel economy and undesirable performance from the engine and transmission. The tow/haul mode should be used only when pulling a heavy trailer.

Thank You for the Post CaptMike! I feel better and better every time I see one of these things towing. I am planning on towing about 4000lbs of car and open deck trailer.

Curious did you go on the hwy at all?

no highway driving, but I don't see any reason why she would have any problems. I was very impressed with the towing capabilities, and I used to work in a Marina up in Jersey when I was a kid so I've towed a few boats..

I plan on taking her down the Fla Keys, which is about a 5 to 6 hour drive. Other than burning more fuel I don't expect any problems at all...

Good info, keep us posted when you go to the Keys. I am interested to hear how it goes!

What's the axle ratio for your Van?

hey 3PedalJohn,

I towed the boat back down to the house last Friday, and she did real good. mostly around town driving but got it up to 60mph for a stretch and it handled it good. it seems to shift harder but only because it's shifting at a higher rpm... all in all was very good.
