Hitch for a Shorty, spare tire too?

Hitch for a Shorty, spare tire too?

Postby ssbf1 [OP] » April 10th 2017, 3:29pm

I've got a 92 Shorty and want to install a Class III hitch. I've been looking over the posts but can not find a definitive answer on weather someone is making a hitch for a Shorty or if Ext hitches fit them. Will a hitch on a Shorty take up the spare tire space beneath? Thank you for any advise.

My understanding is that there is not a hitch specifically made for the shorty but a hitch for the EXT can be used on the shorty.

The hitch bolts on in place of the rear bumper mounting brackets. This area is the same whether it is a shorty or ext. The difference is once you get past the bumper brackets. There is an oval slotted hole and another welded nut hole on the ext. The shorty does not have this extra welded nut hole but instead uses a carriage bolt through a small capture plate in the oval slotted hole. This gives 3 mounting bolts on each side which I understand is the minimum for the class III hitch.

As far as the spare tire goes. I have heard that the hitch prohibits the use of the factory mounting location on the shorty. Not sure if that is the space saver or full size spare.

Tucks up nice, behind the rear bumper, you can barely see it. And, on this shorty, there was never enough room for a spare tire of any size. Follow mark mitch's link for the spare tire carrier gizmo.

This is misinformation My 89 is a shorty and has both the holes for the bumper and the elongated holes for an extra bolt And my original donut spare did in fact mount under my van with the hitch in place. Now it may be possible that my van came factory with the hitch as it does not have a manufacturers sticker of any sort on it. which would explain why mine has the elongated holes. Either way just google the hitch and if your interested in the rear door tire carrier I posted them both above. Mark

Clarification - on this shorty, the custom exhaust tail pipe is in the way & None of the factory hardware was ever there. :poke:

The instructions claim that the 15 inch spare will fit. (16 In. spare requires relocation)
