If you ever plan on selling that let me know.

Correct, Eimac 3-500Z's! Both in great shape.

I was surprised to learn they are worth good money. I was also surprised to learn they are re-buildable! Who knew! I was also surprised to learn the black amplifiers were a little more rare.

Always ran it on 220V. It was INCREDIBLE to say the least!!! Drove it with a lot of power too. Talked all over the world... and locally destroyed my rural community and neighborhood on a Wilson Moonraker-4 up high in the sky. I had just rebuilt the power supply, new diodes, caps, and transformer (back in the day)... moved, and never ran it since.

I sure do miss those GOOD OL' DAYS!!!

They have a large following, very well built rigs. My dad had one, ran it on 120v and drove it with 80 watts and it easily produced 1100+, I can imagine what it would do on 220v! He also had the moonraker but it was only on a 30ft tower....luckily we lived way out in the country but when he would transmit forget about watching any tv, lol!

Those tubes are worth some cash as is the whole unit! A lot of people will put 3-500ZG tubes it them to save the original Eimac's. I love the old Ham stuff.

Over the years, the tubes in mine had gotten separated from the amplifier. They were wrapped in some old "tube socks" (no pun intended), and my wife had stuffed them in the bottom of a box with a bunch of crap piled on top of them. Thankfully, I rescued them (undamaged) and returned them to the amp where they'll be safe and at home. I wasn't aware there is a generic replacement tube... lol. I've been out of it for a few decades now.

Yeah, I drove mine with several amps in stages of succession... a 20W (Black Cat Modulator Jewel Box) driving a larger 200W amp... finally driving the Heathkit amp. With a strong source of wall power and low reflected power and finely tuned... I did see OVER 2KW! You could hear your modulation coming from the tubes.

Local communications however, was my passion. CB was a HUGE part of my life in the 70's-80's (followed by vanning). I ran my station and mobile responsibly and proud. Met many life-long friends on radio, joined clubs, did "witch-hunts" and jamborees... met girlfriends.. even my wife too.

Just fondly reminiscing! Those were fun and amazing times! :D

Awesome setup! would love to see pics if you have any.

The 9ft whip was always the first mod my dad would do to any car he got, then he would spend the weekend installing gear and fine tuning.

He worked over 60 miles away from home and mom would talk to him all the way there, sounded like he was right in the room, lol. WAY before the days of cell phones.

I can remember him talking skip too, he had a map by his rig and he would put a pin in where ever he had talked too.

Wimpy has a classic radio collection, along with a few extra tubes... getting REEEEAAAALLLY hard to find original tubes these days, but I have seen solid state replacements pop up for the more popular ones.... cool, but i'll pass.

Here's the one I have on display right now, trans-ocianic along with my tube tester and a few other bits..

That looks like a Sencore TC 130 Mighty Mite tube tester.

Is that a Silvertone radio or a Zenith? It looks like the 5227 model.

Very nice display!

Wimp, that's a GREAT display for vintage radio and electronics!
I have some vintage stuff as well.. but really hadn't thought of a good way to display them.

I really wish I hadn't gotten rid of a very vintage tall standing Atwater Kent 475 shortwave set from the 1930's. It was a set I got from my grandparents who lived the woods in upper Mich back in the 60's... and it was old back then! The magnetic coil in the speaker had gone bad after I moved it to Florida, but I didn't know that at the time. Now I would have been able to fix it. Man could that thing pick up some stations around the world! Great sound too!

Thanks bro, however I just realized its time to swap the radio for another from the collection so they don't get jealous. Since this picture, I added a 48 star flag in the back of the display and used 2 of the tubes.

That is one heck of a radio you had there! Well, stuff happens but i'm sure it found a good home. Got any others?

My step-dad is an avid collector/ repairer of vintage communications devices, especially radios, and gave me a big chunk of his collection. All my 6 radios work, except for 1 than is in need of a rare tube (forget which one).

like that Trucker said, the CB lets you know where all the Bears are.. watch out for them smokies.

But there is an app for your cell phone that works just as good, if your on a busy highway.

Waze

download it, I have the android version and it worked great on a trip from East coast Florida to West coast on I-4. it gets your location and if anybody else has it on the same highway it points them out and you will get verbal warnings of vehicles on the side of the road, any traffic incidents, and if there are police in plain view, hidden, or rolling... and you report anything you see to benefit the folks behind you.

Funny, I just got an old Radio Shack 40 Channel CB Radio and was thinking about putting it in the Van. I also have a Hand held UHF or VHF not sure radio that is in my Van. Lump should know it's a Baofeng. I've turned it on but never used it. I just got a book for local repeaters with it as well.

I don't know why anyone would think CB radio is dead. Any radio that works point to point without the need of towers or satellites is priceless. Even if those bands are reassigned in the future you can still broadcast and receive. In order for anyone to render those radios useless they would have to generate some seriously powerful radiation to fry your set. IMO it's cheap insurance. How many comm satellites do you think would need to be compromised before your cell phone was useless?
