New battery drained by security system

New battery drained by security system

Postby astrobar [OP] » January 9th 2011, 11:15pm

I replaced my battery in my '02 Astro AWD a week ago and as soon as I got the leads bolted up, the siren started wailing & eventually turned itself off. I have the "CodeAlarm" security system, I've tried every combination of the 3 buttons on the remote to reset it, but it's still draining my battery. Does anyone know the procedure for resetting this thing? Thanks for any help, Brian.

Try disconnecting the battery from the alarm , pull fuse , the manual should offer more tips.
Try starting with the wiring diagram and trace every wire one at a time to make sure that it does not cause a constant drain , a glove box light will run down a battery overnight , when you are sure that all is well with the wiring and think it is just the alarm , you may need to contact the company who makes it and ask them , and you might have a defective unit

Sounds like it's not broken. Just needs to be reset. You didn't mention the model # but here's the website. Just follow the drop down menus and you'll find your alarm.

I've disconnected the van's battery several times & tried all kinda configurations w/ the remote, are you saying the alarm has it's own battery?
I've got no wiring diagram for the alarm system, & I definitely didn't have this problem until I replaced my battery.
I've been on the AudioVox site, & I'm not seeing my system(On a side note, it came with the van, it was a Verizon vehicle previously),but I'm not really sure what system I've got.
Thanks for the help.

I was referring to disconnecting the battery or fuse in order to find out if it is the alarm or maybe something else causing the drain ,
if you always had the alarm installed and did not have a drain problem , then maybe there is something that got pushed or a wire got chafed or is rubbing metal at the replacing of the battery , ,
is there any writing or markings anywhere on the unit that might be useful in identifying the model number ? might be able to find a diagram ,
what is it specifically doing that makes you think it is the alarm draining the battery, does it not stop sounding the siren? When you say it turned itself off , is that cause it drained the battery or does the battery still have power and how much and how are you determining all this ?

I've disconnected all the fuses in both outer & interior blocks with test light between neg batt & neg batt lead ,checking to see if the light goes out when fuse is removed. I also found a taped 3 fuse "port", along the harness under the dash, removed all 3 fuses separately, with my test light in series with the negative batt lead & the neg batt terminal. None of the 3 broke the circuit, I. E., the drain.
I don't know what my unit is supposed to look like- What am I looking for? Something like a M.A.P. sensor type box ? also, If I disconnect anything from the unit, my starter will disable, right? The unit was probably installed soon after the van was bought new, by Verizon(2002-2003), so it's of that era "Code Alarm" system.
When I say it turned itself off, I mean it went through 3 or 4 rounds of constant siren(one mode only) & then stopped sounding off.

Are you sure that once the siren has quit the alarm is still draining the battery? Most alarms will sound the siren when changing out the battery. The alarm will go through a mode or two, then it'll work the way it should.

I had to stuff my siren with a rag until it quit. Haven't had a problem since.

Not sure if this will work for you, but it's worth a try. Stuff a rag in the siren horn. Connect the battery. Get in the van and turn the ignition on, but don't start the van. Find the valet switch, press and hold it until the alarm chirps twice. Turn the ignition off. The alarm is now in valet mode and will not function like it would normally. Wait a couple minutes then press the valet switch once. This will turn the valet mode off. If all works well, your alarm should work like normal.

sometimes a bad ground can cause batt. drainage. I would first disconnect alarm for few days n c if batt. drainage continues. If not, then for sure the alarm is screwed up, but if the problem continues, check ur grounds or i have even seen a bad alt. eat a batt.( reason being that the alt. starts working once acc. is on but if it shorts it can backfeed n start pulling from batt.) also if u have after market radio equipment, extra batt., cap., etc.., then well thats a longer anwser. let me know if it this helps u. :chevy:

You are looking for a black box about 3x3. Installers almost always mount it under the steering column or behind the left kick panel by the driver's foot. The wiring will look different. Not like the factory wiring and you'll see zip ties and scotch lock connectors. I've removed over 100 alarm systems as an automotive tech. They frequently go bad. The circuit board goes out or the tech installed the ground with a self tapping screw that loosened up over time. The alarm also will have an in line relay somewhere near the box. You can try unplugging that.
If your drain is big enough to light a test light you should have no problem finding it. Keep pulling fuses then try relays and finally disconnecting components like alternator, starter etc
