Stock speaker repair pics

Postby smokinjoe [OP] » March 10th 2011, 4:37am

So my stock speakers died. As with all old speakers the foam suspension goes first. As I have done with some good home speakers I decided to repair them. (Although I did buy some alpines for the interim)

Here are some pics of the steps. Its pretty straight forward and art & crafts oriented.

I got these repair kits on ebay but there are other online stores like speakerworld.

This may seem like work but its like changing the tires on your van. You dont throw the van away, just change the worn rubber. Also if you factor in driving around to buy speakers, and that the kit I used costs $6 shipped, this is an atractive option.

So I put these back in & can tell you they sound great at all volume levels. Listening back to back against the alpines (5.25") they still sounded good. I can pump the bass without distortion. Very happy with this project & didnt have to go shopping.

I remember when I could spend $6 to fix a speaker. Now I spend $80 on a full recone kit. Ouch, my wallet just went flat.

Good job though. Pics are real good. I bet the sound great, for factory speakers. Probably just like when they were new

Where do you get the foam surrounds at? I've never run across anyplace that sells them in a Brick and Mortar store...you get these online?
A temporary fix usually becomes a permanent solution, therefore it does not exist.

Yeah got these on ebay. You wont find them in stores since they would much rather sell you new speakers. Did the same thing at home with 2 pairs of bose speakers and a set of infinitys.

Great post, smokinjoe! I was getting ready to look for replacement 6x9s for my car, but this inspired me to order new surrounds and rebuild the factory speakers.
Thanks!
