sound deading roof/ trying to kill roof flex

Postby petergunz559 [OP] » August 3rd 2011, 1:14am

Hopes this is the right spot, A couple of months back I installed 2 18s in my 98 astro. Its sounded real good and hit really hard, now the roof sounds like poop. really bad, and the bass is covered through the rattles. I dampend the sides with spray foam and some fatmat. but sense I did that the roof sounds even worse. any strength the roof on a astro before? Im going outside in the heat in a bit to remove headliner. any tips n pics would be highly appreciated. thank you oh and if i remove the roof rack, would that make the roof weaker??

You need to use sound dampening material , something that absorbs noise and vibration, Depending how much power you are using it could be a big expensive task to get what you want , there is a tutorial on how Mr Singh did his van with like about 30 pics on how he built it ,,likely the most impressive van you'll see in any time soon ; the entire rear of van has like 18 large subs and can make a shirt DANCE , literally

This is his van , I am sure he can tell you anything you need to know , you can see/hear his system videos on you tube

second skin audio sound deadener. Look at the sludge. It can be rolled or brushed on. It is thick and dries hard as hell. It's a little expensive, but well worth the price to get rid of the roof rattle (or any other rattle). If you're serious into audio, you'll want to get this stuff.

What I have found with my roof is the supports going across the width of the van came loose from the roof. Not sure how to get them back in place/shape to do any good.

You can also use, along with sludge, minimal expanding foam. Spray it along the supports, in between the roof and support. This will help out a lot and once you've gone over that with sludge.. you'll be hard pressed to hear a rattle from the roof in the areas you put it.

That second skin can also be sprayed on. They sell the gun for @30 dollars.
