I think it can but to be sure measure the height and width of both to make sure there is room for the 98 radio

No.

The newer style radios are a little bit too deep.
Unless you want it hanging out the front!

Yea that maybe , I know on a Gen 2 van there is a few inches of space behind the radio , but haven't been in the dash of that early of a van for a long time , depending on how much effort you want to go to , you can pull your radio out and measure how much space you have , that way you will know exactly how much room you have to work with , as this will be needed to know with whatever radio you decide to go with , there are some others here with the Gen1 vans that have replaced their radios , they maybe able to tell you how much space there is to work with .

The space you need to install it flush is consumed by heating and air conditioning ducts behind the radio.

Phantom, I know this first hand. BTDT.

The wiring harness is different too. Changed around '92 or so, I have a mid-90s radio in my '91, and I had to change out the harness. Of course, mine was still from a 1st gen style dash, so it physically fit. Not sure how deep a 2nd gen radio is.

Here is the different harness connectors I had to deal with, not sure what a '98 harness looks like. '91 on the left, newer on the right.
