Anyone made a Double-Din fit?

Anyone made a Double-Din fit?

Postby KSMatic [OP] » April 30th 2012, 11:52am

I have a 2003 GMC Safari and the slot where ther radio goes doesn't fit a double-din, at least from what I can see. Anyone tried to make a double-din fit without much modification? Do they sell kits like the whole dash plate to make it work? I'm trying to brain storm here, if not, I may just try to modify the whole piece and make it in to an ipad mold and relocate the AC controls somewhere else.

Are you referring to the actual mounting area inside of the dash or the trim piece that surrounds the radio?

I looked at the inside with the dash removed, it seems that I would have to relocate the A/C controllers in order for the double-din to work. Which also means that I would have to modify the dash as well for it to work.

This is how my dash looks like. Just debating if I want to go through the trouble of doing a double-din, or just get a single-din with a roll out LCD display.

Reason I want to change out my stock radio because my lights are out on it and it doesn't accept AUX stock and had to buy another module to do so.

You could always get a pop up display unit without moding the dash.

Don't like those nearly as much as a one piece double din unit. I wish these vans could fit a double-din correctly without modding, also.

I thought of that but I liked the full piece without having it move out as it blocks my AC controller and etc..

I have a 2 DIN head unit in mine. There is just enough room for everything. Watch out for deep 2 DINs, they won't fit flush without modifying the defrost duct.

DUDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HOW?!?! BUT.... WAIT!!???!!!?? I MEAN!!!!!!!!!....... DUDE!!!!!!!

That looks *****!!!!!!!

How did you do the trim around the unit?! Did you or a shop do it?! Looks AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!

Which head unit? How deep is too deep? I haven't dug into it yet cause im just researching, but that looks freakin bad A$$!!!!!!!

Im looking to use a unit w/o a plate around the unit like there would be on a single DIN, and on top of that im designing it myself and doing the work myself. Lots of youtube videos to watch..

Hey with the after market unit, can you still use the secondary unit(behind driver for middle bench) Is that a topic already covered? Ive searched but maybe im just looking it up wrong...

Any and all info is much appreciated,

I installed the Pioneer AVH-P3200BT using a single din install kit that I hacked up and bolted to it. Once I had that figured out it was easy. There is about 1/4" above the unit for cooling, just enough space behind to connect all the wires, and the bottom just clears the metal cross bar below the stereo. I just notched the stock beige trim panel above and below the stereo's face with a grinder and smoothed it with a mini file. It still comes out just like the factory stereo.

I swapped the AC controls and my double DIN so that the Radio is up top. Check out the download/file.php?id=15312&mode=view for a pic.
