Speaker Question

Speaker Question

Postby Camper [OP] » November 21st 2008, 5:50pm

I did some checking around before I posted to make sure this wasn't already asked... I think I have a bad front door speaker in my '03 Astro, it sounds rattley and releatively crappy, and the speaker cover (the plastic door cover) is cracked, so it may have been damaged that way. I need to replace the speaker, and if possible, the plastic speaker cover on the door. Can anyone tell me if the speaker can be accessed by prying off that cover 2) if I can buy a replacement cover for that broken cover 3) is the speaker installation relatively easy?
I figure I can get the speaker at radio shack, but if anyone can reccomend nicer ones, (without getting me in too much trouble with the wife) I might go there! The sound system doesn't sound that great, it's too bad they didn't put a speaker in the dashl; it would have really helped. Thanks! :swerve:

If you're not an audiophile, I'd go to a wrecking yard and get an original. It would likely fit (and sound)better than anything Rat Shack has to offer. When I got my S10, I ended up going this route. 5 years later I swapped in aftermarket speakers and I swapped them back out. You could always price one at a dealer, but I'd imagine that would be some $$. If you have a stock stereo you might want to go this way to get the impedence matching right, I'm not sure what the stock speaker impedance is. If your stereo is aftermarket, your speakers are likely 8ohms each.

I've not looked at an 03, mine's a 95 with dash speakers. Usually it's a matter of popping off the door panel & the swap is straightforward. Your mileage may vary.

aftermarket is 4 Ohm. stock is either 2 Ohm, 4 Ohm, or 6 Ohm. chevy changed it around throughout the years

Thanks guys... is the door panel removal a big job? I don't want to get in over my head. Any pointers on this would be greatly appreciated, and the ones that were just given to me ARE greatly appreciated! Thanks guys, I will shop around for speakers, and look at some local salvage yards. Thanks for the specs.

Door panel removal is pretty straightforward. Be ready to go to the FLAPS (friendly local auto parts store) for some replacement fasteners. I usually break one or two at least when I pull a panel.

I happen to have some pics of my door in my photobucket album here:

They're probably not very helpful though, they don't show much.

There is a tool made for removing the door panel, you may or may not want to invest in it. I have one somewhere, I'm not sure if I've ever used it. I usually just get a fingertip grip & pull, starting on the lower corner.

Good luck, keep us posted! :chevy:
