Who uses a CB Radio? HAM, DX, 2 way etc

Postby jetfari [OP] » March 20th 2008, 11:13pm

Hi all, I used to be a member a long time ago, the "Original AstroSafari"! Great to have the site back and the board looks easy and slick to use, thank you to the admin for this.

I have a CB to install in my Safari and was wondering who uses one in their van, how they mounted it, which antenna they use, etc. Any tips appreciated!

I have a 90 Astro Window van that I use for my delivery job. And yes I have a CB radio which comes in handy for traffic/smokie reports. Any how being somewhat old school I like K-40 antennas.
I'm using a K40 unimount which when assembled to the antenna will fit nicely on the intersecting corner of my luggage rack! I then ran the coax down the rail (wire tied) towards the top and through the window behind the drivers seat. Eventually I'll co-phase 2-K40's, one on each front corner of the rack and run coax the same, unless someone has a better idea? posting.php?mode=reply&f=32&t=462#
:confused1:
Ebay was where I obtained the unimount and K40, however the mounts are a rare item and you may have to keep a close eye out for one.
Oh ya, the antenna twist off for garage and car washes for low clearances!
So imagine a ASTRO with horns, I think its so COOL!http://www.astrosafari.com/posting.php?mode=reply&f=32&t=462#

Postby cookiemonster59 » November 6th 2012, 7:27pm

I was in the Navy fm '61-'81, and once I got stationed on the East Coast, I did a lot of 'road-running' on the weekends, fm whatever base I was stationed @, to/fm the Akron, Ohio area. Once I got into CB's, I had one in every vehicle I owned back then. The nicest setup I had was the AM/FM/8-track/CB in my '72 Trans Am 455 H.O., as everything was integrated in one pkg., and when a CB call came in, it 'muted' whatever music was playing so you could hear it. Of course, this was back before radar detectors were popular, and it was just about the only way you could keep track of 'Smokey-the-Bear', or talk to another 'road-warrior' if you were 'Caravaning/Wagon-Training' (pre-cell phone era). I still have 3-4 CB's laying around, but because I don't like all the 'BS traffic' on them anytime you're around any big cities, :blah: :blah: I haven't felt the urge to install one for well over 15 yearss. I still have what was then a top-of-the-line magnetic antenna, but for the life of me I can't tell you what mfgr/name it went by. Since electronics changes so fast (not just computers, mind you), I'd find someone who has a CB in their vehicle, and check with them on what's the newest & best value for the $ you want to spend. Radio Shack used to be the place to go for CB stuff, but while the  generation knows everything there is to know about computers, MP-3's, 'Game Boys/X-Boxes', 'smart' phones, etc., your guess is as good as mine how knowledgeable they are when it comes to such 'old/antiquated' technology. :driving:

I have an old 40 channel cb so I read this section and then found that site soon after so I added it. When I take my family across country in my Astro I will have my CB hooked up just for the hell of it.

Where is Lumpy when you need him? I think he has a HAM radio in his. I have a CB Radio and Kicker in mine. I have no idea how it is set up or anything, my dad put it in. But it has the big antenna on the roof.

I got a Cobra CB in my van. You can get CB radios dirt cheap at swap meets now. I think i have $30 into my whole set up. I have only used maybe twice though.

Haha....I have a Cobra 29 Nightwatch Bluetooth with weather radio in mine. Use it all the time....I drive for a hot-shot delivery courier. I have it mounted in the center, where the rear view mirror would be....the bracket it mounted to the underside of the overhead center console. I run a Wilson 1000 roof mount antenna. And, oh, I have removed my rear view mirror to allow for the CB to be there. Just learned how to see out the side view mirrors. I also have an external speaker (Cobra) mounted on the overhead console, pointed back at my head, and mounted just to the right of my head. (so i can hear good while the windows are down)

Roll on.....

i have a Galaxy 98VHP mounted on the center console door( the door has been re-enforced, the radio is heavy) mic is a Astatic D104M6C, radio shack digital SWR/power meter w/remote, 3k low pass filter, beldin 213 coax cable hooked up to a Wilson 5000 mag mount antenna ( a permanent mount has been purchased to get rid of the mag mount, just gotta install it.)

these vans take well to a C.B., so far this has been the best talkin vehicle i have owned, very little noises and funky sounds coming from the CB and that's even while i have my 3k watt stereo on, which is rare,LOL

although i get very little feed back and noises, i still have a few other items to install to make the cb even better in the transmit and recieve area.

i can take pics of it in the morning, after i clean the van though,LOL

When I was going to mount my Azden PCS-4000 2M wrig, I asked my buddy who does installs professionally if he knew of a good spot to mount one; He said that there isn't really one. The best one I saw was a center console up top someone had hollowed out to stick one in. Pics are some where if they haven't been lost to bit rot. I am almost thinking a custom seat side mount personally, but that would still be an awful lot of work.

I didn't know where to mount mine, so I just have it on the dash. I should go to the junkyard and get a overhead console to put it in....that might be the best spot.

Here's how I have mine mounted. This is the Cobra 29 NW Bluetooth with Weatherband. I just got the new Cobra 20 LX Digital one...nice radio. I used to have mine on top of the dash, only thing, it looks a little stealable...not that anyone steals these things anymore. Heck, if you're under 35 years old, they probably don't even know what it is!!!

i wanted to mount my rig there too, but was afraid it would rip off where i mounted it, the Galaxy 98VHP is a really heavy radio and if it fell off and hit me it would knock me out,LOL so i installed it here

then i popped a hole on the roof for my wilson 5000 and also changed the coax to Belden 213. getting my van ready for my straight 8 pill linear,LOL
