Anemic Blower motor

Anemic Blower motor

Postby Astro Pop [OP] » June 18th 2017, 5:49am

Does the front blower motor on the Gen II's just barely blow or do I have a weak motor? I have four speeds and I hear the blower but it just is weak.
1st speed = might be on, it's spinning but where's the air?
2nd speed = it's alive and puffing
3rd speed = I can feel something coming out
4th speed = about equal to 2nd speed on our VW and 1st on my other car. Not even good enough on a 103 degree day.

Ideas ? Or does a blower motor from another GM vehicle work in these?

Did you do all the standard stuff, like vacuum lines, check the ducts, etc? I assume you are looking at the main vents right?
I remember reading something to this effect and I believe either Chev or Leeann answered on it... stay tuned...

Check the wiring and resistor pack first. The motor itself should be spinning pretty good, they do wear out though.
After that you'll need to see that the ducts are clear and all actuators and flappers are moving when asked to.
The motor is about 30 bux last I bought one. GM used similar motors in all the vans I've had, '87 Beauville, '93 G10, '93 safari and my '97 safari. The best was the '87, with limited space the ducting design is lame but IMO GM got worse as the years moved on.

I thinks it might be a combination of issues... the blower motor may be a little weak, and the vent system is very poor. I replaced my blower a couple years ago and it DID improve the airflow, but it still lacks overall compared to my Gen 1.

While I had the motor out, I did clean and rinse the evaporator coil (be careful not to damage and bend fins). I also removed as much leaves and debris on the inlet side as possible.

Also, check for proper voltage while motor is running full speed.

Thanks for the tips. When it dips to under 95 degrees, I'll check those out.

Blower motor is a brush motor. Pull it, pull the rear cap, clean out the dust and deglaze the brushes.

Replace the blower motor resistor, check the vehicle-side harness for arcing/burning.

Clean the evaporator- gently!

Make sure your ducting is intact and properly connected.
