Went to Pepboys to get A/C checked

Went to Pepboys to get A/C checked

Postby Maxximum_44 [OP] » July 12th 2012, 10:56pm

I went to Pepboys to get my A/c Checked and fixed. I went for the free A/c evaluation, ended up paying for an system leak evaluation $38.61 a couple of hours later. I was told that I need a suction hose, reciever drier and a rear (suction?) hose. $1031 for everything minus the suction hose because they did not stock it. So after they got the price from the dealer it was going to be more. After waiting 45mins for the dealer, I told the lady that I'll just go now.

Here's a breakdown of what they quoted me:

$555.00 Remove and replace Suction hose
$13.32 Pepguard extended labor warranty
$88.80 Remove and replace reciever drier
$216.39 Deluxe A/C recharge
$45.49 Four season Drier or Accumulator
$ ? A/c suction hose from drier to evaporator

Needless to say, I didn't go this route. I should be able to piece this together myself, Right? I mean its a receiver drier and some suction hoses. Anything I need to be aware of?

$550 for a hose? $216 to recharge the system? They are crazy. Do it youself or take it somewhere that is cheaper.

I agree. Go to the junkyard and get what you need.. IF you really need it. I'd probably just get the hoses and let that be that. I don't know how you can really test the hoses unless the JY has a unlimited replacement warranty.

Typically any time you have the system open for any significant period of time, including leaks that are not sealed, you are "supposed" to replace the dryer. I've never done it.

I've actually removed the dryer and had my entire system open for the better part of a month. I put it all back together one day and everything worked fine. Maybe not as well as if I had all new parts but nevertheless my A/C worked.

X2 I have had mine open several times never replaced anything. Just charged it and mine like sitting in front of a refrigerator when it on. I have HVAC license I know better. Have a vacuum pump. I still never do it.
It is a car system and they are primitive, and not touchy at all on our vans. They just work. As I was taught in college. KISS keep it simple stupid. And unlike these things ignition system, they kept it simple and it just works.
