blower motor

blower motor

Postby crgastro [OP] » December 13th 2010, 9:13am

i know that my blower motor is bad it has been going for about 2 years or so. it only works now on med high and high. it sounds like metal on metal and it is vibrating a lot. i know what it sounds like, the one in my house went out a few years ago and made the same sound. i got a quote from o'rileys for $38 with a 1 year warranty for a new blower motor and they have it in stock. how much of a pain is it to replace. i don't want to have to deal with major electrical or the coolant system if at all possible or cutting into things. i dont have a dry place to replace it at right now. my grandparents might let me use their carport if i ask nicely. also what kind of tools would i need to undertake this. with limited money coming in right now, it would be nice to be able to do it myself. i do not have a place to drain the coolant, and don't want to if at all possible. also how long does it usually take to replace one of these? thanks in advance.

It is real easy , first remove the water coolant overflow reservoir by removing the 2 pop up black fasteners disconnect the overflow hose, unplug the windshield washer motors from the washer bottle. Then the motor is to the left close to the fender , there are about ( 5) 9/32 screws that mount the motor, unplug the resistor from the motor ,remove the screws, pull motor out . Install in reverse order

Nice pics chevymaher , I just thought I would mention to the OP that the 98 motor will have a 2 prong connector on the motor , The one pictured is from a Gen 1 van , the Gen 2 van has a 2 prong connector and that wire you will pull off is directly connected to,part of the resistor so be careful when pulling on it. You may have to replace the resistor also since you do not have the slower speeds , a motor drawing too much current causes the resistor to go bad .While you have it apart you should pull off the connector to the resistor(directly to the right) and look inside the connector for any burnt looking connector pins inside the connector. It is a common problem on these motors that when they get old they start drawing more current than originally designed and that causes burnt or damaged connector which may cause the motor to lose power and not run. Making sure that you have a good connector now can save you the time of removing the overflow bottle in the future , and it may save you time and hassle to replace the resistor now as well , cause in order to access the resistor you have to remove the water bottle.

The Blower Resistor is Ac Delco part # 15-80550 cost is about $42
