A/C CLutch makes noise

A/C CLutch makes noise

Postby gmcco [OP] » May 6th 2011, 11:12pm

Well my (NTM) '95 Safari A/C clutch makes a kind of whine when the engine runs.
I was looking at it this afternoon and I can spin the front of the A/C Clutch by hand.
This does not seem right to me , so feels like I am now in the hunt for a new compressor.
Which brings me to the fact it seems '95's use a one year only compressor, any recommendations
on where to look for a replacement. Don't say local as this is California in the Summer and A/C shops
double the prices.
thanks
Craig
life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely, in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways totally worn out shouting "HOLY SH*T...WHAT A RIDE!"

If it is not running the compressor will turn thats normal.the noise if not bad is not a big deal.Does it stop when you turn on the air?mine was in a junkyard in a van that had no hood for who knows how long.the clutch was rusted it would not disconnect.I got it for twenty bucks and I could return it if I could not get it to work.I smacked it with a hammer a few times and it broke loose. It worked but made a racket when the air was not on.I was hoping to just finnish out the summer with it.Longer story short I kept spraying lube on it.2 years later it still working and quiet as a mouse now.

You can order just the clutch either from a local supply or online(Amazon, etc). Most local retailers like Advance Auto, etc. Have a "lend" program and you can borrow the tools with a deposit. You will need to use a clutch puller. I am told that you dont need to remove the compressor and wont lose the charge either. May be worth a try !!
