'90 Safari - Missing heater ductwork?

'90 Safari - Missing heater ductwork?

Postby 98cirider [OP] » May 13th 2011, 4:08pm

I was browsing through my Service Manual and noticed a diagram (see first picture below) of some ductwork that comes from under the dash, down over the doghouse and into the cabin. My Safari does not have this, and never has to my knowledge.

In the last decade that i have been doing all my maintenance and repairs, I have wondered why there is an open section in the ducting under the dash, (see the second picture below). We've never gotten cold in the van, but we have lived in Phoenix for quite some time, so using the heater is rare.

Am I missing some ductwork? I mean, is there any possible reason it should have been removed?

Or did some chucklehead just forget to put it back in when the vehicle was serviced?

Thanks,
David

If you have the "rear heat" button on your dash then you are missing that duct work.

The piece you refer to is easily damaged while trying to cram it back together the way it comes from the factory. I have had to modify two of these plastic pieces over the course of the last decade.

I may still have one in the 90 Safari that I use as a "parts shed", if you would like to have it, I will look and see if it's still there. Let me know.

My van does not have the rear heat or a button. It just seems odd that all that heated air would be pouring onto the top of the doghouse, without much of an opening to escape into the cabin.

Bob,

If you have one and would no mind letting it go, that would be great. Let me know what you'd like for it and the shipping.

Hey David,

I took a look in the "shed" (a 90 Safari, no less) and guess what. I think you might have gotten lucky... There, close to the top o' the heap sat one slightly used and abused heat duct ! (smashed, repaired and

ready for installation. So, what's the address ? PM me.

Hey Leeann,

This here chucklehead did a trick on it trying to put 'er back in place, but Mr. Goodwrench (aka boB) straightened it out with a bit of tinwork on the "scoop". Ha.

Bob

BTW: So far the "shed" has given our posters: 1 ea I/P to South Carolina, 1 ea Seat Belt Bolt to Tennessee, and now a Heater Duct to Arizona. Not a bad record so far, now, if only someone

would want 1 ea slightly used and abused 90 Safari, with lots of holes where stuff used to be, maybe I could get my driveway back. (The price is right !)
