Blower stopped blowing

Blower stopped blowing

Postby smokinjoe [OP] » June 1st 2011, 11:48pm

Found a similar old post but different. My blower stopped on all including hi setting but the ac is making cold air. The other post suggested the resistor but I need a map. Where is that & could it be the connectors behind the battery? (the other suggestion). Could it be contacts behind the fan switch itself? Please help, its really hot!

Sounds like it the blower motor itself.Try tapping it with a wrench see if it starts.Brushes may be wore out in motor.Pull off the plug and see if it getting juice with a voltmeter.Edit I had to go find your relay copy and edit picture post it somewhere else to post it :blah: :blah: :blah: anyway after the long wait heres where it is.

Chevy, I looked for the blower motor like in the pic but is it under the hood or the dash. Or is that just the relay & not the motor to hit with the wrench?

Look at the illustration: (All the items are located under the hood)

Item # 1 is the blower relay.

The item that looks like it should be a headlight (under the "A") is the blower motor.

Trace the electric wire that is attached to the blower motor, it will lead directly to the resistor pack, which is ususlly located in the plenum chamber.

Hope this helps.

Before you go proding, banging, etc. You might want to check for 12v at the motor connection with the key ON and the fan switchset to HIGH.

Could be a fuse, the switch, the relay, the resistor pack, any of the connections... or the motor. Usually the motor, but not always. Ya gotta check these things out.

OK so already checked every fuse (ok). Uplugged both connections to the motor, cleaned & dielectric greased them, started the van, wrapped on the motor & now its working fine. Again thanks for all the help, I am starting to enjoy wrenching on this thing.

Well, that indicates that the fan motor bearings are indeed starting to fail. The fan/motor assembly is relatively easy to change out, but you have to pull out the washer fluid & coolant overflow containers to do it. I paid for it once, but if I have to do it again I know that I can do it myself in about 20 minutes.

Should I just go to an autozone or do I have to find another source for the blower?

I have the exact same problem, and had checked the resistor assembly, but it's overbuilt for this application, so more than likely not it. If this problem has happened more than once, you will also want to check the selector switch in the dash. When these motors malfunction they can overload the wires/contacts on the switch.

Tapping on it does the trick for me, or if i'm feeling lazy, start it, turn on the blower, and then open & drop the hood, and it usually fires up.
More than likely the brushes are worn down, or the commutator is dirty. Either way, just replace the motor.
Bad bearings usually whine, grind, smoke, or freeze.

I personally don't like autozone electrical components; I know advance auto has it for $42. there are 3 different blowers for our vans, depending on how many electrical posts it has, and the location of the breather tube. Drive it there so you can compare it.
It's also my understanding you have to pull the radiator overflow and washer reservoirs, but they aren't bad, 1 hose and 2 bolts on each (use a pump or siphon tube to empty them first).

Also, you can get it with or without a new cage fan ($42 is without a new fan attached).

Good luck!
