7lb Radiator Cap? Why?

7lb Radiator Cap? Why?

Postby Mr_Bowtie [OP] » August 30th 2009, 2:04am

I was looking over my '90 Safari and it has a 7lb radiator cap on it. From the factory its suppose to have a 15lb cap.

Any reasons why someone would change it to a 7lb cap? Overheating problems?
Is my heat going to suffer this winter with a 7lb cap compared to a 15lb cap?

The motor runs great and doesn't use coolant......just trying to figure out why someone would change the LB cap they are running. The Van runs great and I haven't had one problem with it, so I'm sure I will just leave it. But, it still bothers me knowing it should have a higher LB cap on it. :D

I did some research on this and it seems that the cap is just going to effect the boiling point of the water/antifreeze. They say every LB is worth 3 degrees added to the 212* that water boils at.
So, my 7 LB cap should be just fine. I just found it weird that someone would put the wrong LB cap on. Of course I have seen wierder crap done to vehicles before.

Back when radiators were repairable, I had a radiator guy recommend it all the time to keep the pressure down in the system. It kept the jobs from coming back!
