One more question, the manual says to drain coolant (2 quarts) out first & replace the gasket. Can I just park on an uphill nose up & use the old gasket or rvt? Do I need to drain coolant?

If you dont drain coolant it will just run out when you take it off.not really a big deal

It's just easier and less messy to open the drain on the rad for a little bit. You don't have to drain it dry; you just have to get the level below the t-stat. Not a big deal.

So the heat valve going to the heater core on my van actually is plumbed into the top AND bottom hoses. Do I bypass both and eliminate the whole unit?

Yes just connect both hoses and take out valve and enjoy 3X as much heat as you ever had
