New member here. I've been lurking for the past few weeks as I try to diagnose my 96 Safari. Intermittent no start, rough idle, cuts out at more than 1/4 throttle - and now wont start-period! I'm glad I found this forum for all the wealth of info for my Safari. 180,000+ on the odometer and this is the first big problem this van has had. My father was the second owner and a master mechanic and took very good care of it for 100,000 miles before passing it along to me. After reading and studying all the different problems/solutions, I finally determined that my fuel pump is bad. So today I cut a hole in the floor and pulled the pump out. Put 12v to it and nothing - rapped it smartly on the counter and it produces a nice hummmmm! After questioning my father, he said the pump was replaced a few years ago. He didnt do the work (78 yrs old) and farmed it out to a local mechanic. I guess he did a good job, but put in a carter pump instead of my dad telling him to put in a AC Delco. I wont go to North Carolina to track the guy down to chastise him, but will replace the pump with the AC Delco kit that Rock Auto sells online.
I will admit to liking this van very much. Drives great (when it runs) and gets excellent mileage (26+ on the highway at 60mph). I can drive non stop from Indy to below Atlanta on a single tank - 600+ miles. I love the cargo room this thing has - I can haul 16 sheets of 4x8 1" plywood flat on the floor with room to spare. I checked my vin number at compnine.com and was surprised to find my van is pretty rare for that year. According to the site, it's the only one of 39K+ vans produced that year (96) that has the options it has.
I was tempted to sell it after all the problems, but I'll probably keep it now that I know all the fixes and what to look out for. Think I'll turn it into a camper. Anyway, thanks to everyone on this forum for the fantastic help you give people! It sure helped me and I appreciate it. I hope I can give some good advice back.
