brake line leakage

brake line leakage

Postby RichinMD [OP] » May 31st 2009, 10:24pm

1995 Astro 2wd with tow package.

I have a leak in my brake lines at the rear T fitting on top of the rear end. Unfortunately it is the forward side of the T meaning I need to change the long line. Do I need to drop the fuel tank for this and does anyone have access to a brake line diagram. I have a sneaky suspicion that I won't be able to find any prefabricated lines so this should be fun.

Thanks,
Rich

Hello,

is the leak in the metal line or in the rubber hose? The T-fitting should be attached to the rubber hose.

It's on the metal line at the union, my mistake on the location. The line is pretty rusted although I may be able to splice it a few feet back next to the gas tank. Not sure right now how much room I would have to try to work the problem. I probably won't have time to get to it until next weekend so if anyone knows if I can get a pre fabricated line, that would help a ton.

You will not be able to find a prefab line. Its not terribly hard, I'm working on it right now. Taking the gas tank down is only 15 minutes, just make sure you have as little gas as possible so its not heavy.

I believe it to be 1/4 inch but I'm not sure. Haven't gotten the line out yet, need to drive my other car a bit more so I can drain more gas out of the tank. I found a spot to break into the lines just behind the drivers door connected by a union. Not sure if that's how it was designed or if someone has changed the lines out before, but it is very convenient. I attempted to disconnect the metal line from the rubber one just above the rear end, but no luck there. Snapped the metal line and still can't get it out of the hose. I went ahead and disconnected the metal lines from the T and will just replace the rubber hose as well.

The brake line is 1/4". I just got done with this myself.

And yes, that union is also on my van and appears to be stock.
