Leaf spring squeak

Leaf spring squeak

Postby Astronaught [OP] » October 7th 2010, 3:21am

Anyone else have their leaf springs squeak? I just replaced mine and now they squeak, almost like a lurch when I start to move. Is there something I should have greased?

mine do.. it's kind of embarrassing actually. I wonder if it's not the rubber parts at the end where the bolts hold it to the body have dried up and are now making the noise.

There is no harm done to get those leaves greased up..
Check if the ends off the leaves are not wear out.

mine have begun to squeak on the front spring hangers on both sides of the van, i guess is the added stress of the leafs i put on there with more arc  thats just my guess though

So it sounds like a fairly common problem. I will probably grease the rubber boot a bit to see if that helps. I also think I may not have torqued the metal saddle bracket down tight enough which could definitley be causing the issue. We will see

I spoke to my dad about it. He says to jack up the back of the van until the rear tires are off the ground with the suspension fully relaxed and spray graphite lube between the leaf springs and it should make the squeaks go away.

Though I haven't done it yet I think the best way to do this would be to put a couple bricks at the front tires to stop the van from rolling forward, stack up some bricks under the back end with jack stands on top of them, using a floor jack under the pumpkin, and jack it up a bit while incrementally moving the jack stands up one notch at a time under the 2 frame rails at the rear (just in case the van tips), when you get the rear tires off the ground about 6 - 8 inches, lower the van down into the groves on top of the jack stands SLOWLY, this should allow the leaf spring to extend to the most relaxed position and then lube to your hearts content.

Yeah, my 97 squeaks. I'll be trying some graphite lube.
