Distributor mark wont line up

Distributor mark wont line up

Postby sfeaver [OP] » May 9th 2010, 12:35am

I am putting a L31 350 V8 into my van, and got a LT4 camshaft to go in the motor. Its almost all together, and I go to put in the distributor but it wont line up to the "8" mark right on, its a few degrees before it. One tooth over its past it.

I took off the timing cover and confirmed the dots line up on the gears. It appears that advancing the cam one tooth would put the distributor bang on.

My question, is how accurate is that mark on the distributor? I confirmed on my 4.3 that it is bang on with it at #1 TDC.

Thanks for any advice..

Take a look at cylinder #1. Are both valves closed? They should be.... If they're not, you're not at Zero degrees of the Power stroke.

I think I got it figured out.. I bought an aftermarket aluminum distributer, and its clamp is "fixed" meaning it bolts in one spot.

The factory plastic one isnt, and if turned a bit it lines right up. So I think all I need to do is change clamps and line it up. Too bad I pulled the timing cover back off (and water pump, compressor, ps pump bracket etc) hehe Oh well.

If it sound like i goofed somewhere here please let me know!

Just to update this for others in case they run into this.. You need to set proper timing with the scan tool. So that 8 mark isnt exact. I was fine in the first place. Also, since the computer handles timing, even being off one tooth the motor runs smooth. I couldnt believe it. Just need to set CMP retard to 0 degrees to clear the check engine light.
