No start 2002 Safari

Postby grandpavangrandpavan is online! [OP] » March 18th 2017, 11:33pm

Hey friends,

So I have a 2002 GMC Safari RWD, that ran fine when I parked it about 10 days ago. Now it won't start. I replaced the battery, and tried some starter spray, No dice.

The starter cranks, and it chugs almost like it's getting a fire or two, but won't actually start up. Where should I start diagnosing? Spark plugs? Wires?

It's been pretty wet here in the PNW, I'm really hoping it's not a water seeping into something issue.

Lay it on me...

Suck, bang, blow. In other words, you need fuel, spark and air.

If you've provided fuel with starting fluid and your air filter isn't clogged, time to check spark. Check at the coil, at the distributor and at the plugs. You need good hot, blue spark.

Thanks Leann_93, seems like a good motto. Spark plug check is next. For this van is there an easy or best way to check the coil and distributor?

Any chance a bluetooth OBD monitor would help with any of these problems?

The bluetooth won't check the quality of spark for you; that has to be done by hand.

Pull the coil wire off the distributor and check spark there. If it's bad, the wire itself can be bad or the coil is bad. So if you have a spare, new or known-good wire, attach that and test again. Still bad, the coil is toast. Not uncommon.

Ok good to know.

Follow up report. Yesterday was dry and warmer, through the night to this morning. The van started this morning. Could it be moisture related? If the van is running, will those checks still prove relevant?

Thanks!

It definitely can be moisture related, if you have excessive play in the drive gear, or the wires are aged moisture can have a dramatic effect on it.

Yes. I've had the same issue many times. Sometimes it's as simple as a bad cap, wires, or coil. Do the water torture test.

Best to try this at night or in a darker area.
Remove the doghouse.
Get a clean spray bottle with a mist setting and put some water in it.
Start the vehicle.
I usually start by spraying a lite mist around the coil area.
Rev the engine and look for any spark jumping between the coil and motor.
Repeat the process at the dizzy cap and at the spark plugs.

Also while you're at it pull the cap and check for excessive play in the dizzy .

Is your van a vin w with central multiport fuel injection or something like it? My 1994 astro van had a real bad electrical connector on the CMFI main connector that is deep inside. I replaced the CMFI electrical connector to make the starts reliable again. And what is your fuel pressure while cranking and at rest? Do you have a fuel pressure Gauge? Lack of fuel pressure on fuel injected engines will cause cranking with no start every time! You say spraying starting fluid does not result in start? Did you do a compression test of all of the jugs? What do the spark plugs and wires look like? Bad wires in humid areas can cause no start. Did you try starting at night to see if sparking from plug wires to ground that should not be? I hope these troubleshooting ideas help you find the real problem. When in doubt install new parts!

No. A 2002 is an X vin and the injector is MFI and massively different, as is the electrical connection.
