Low oil pressure

Low oil pressure

Postby dantheman [OP] » November 27th 2016, 11:43pm

Just replaced the power steering pump after noticing a small leak. Got the new one installed and pulley back on (NOT fun) and buttoned her up. Now at idle the oil pressure seems low. I'm accustomed to it idling at 40 psi, but now she's only reading 20 (when parked and at red lights) and fluctuating just a little. At normal driving speed, it reads a steady 40 psi. Any ideas as to what may be causing this?

It is well within the specs for the motor. 8 lbs at idle is good according to GM bulletins.

I had extreme oil pressure issues on my original motor. Red zone at idle when hot. I replaced the oil pressure bypass spring in the oil pump with one from a 302 Z-28 camaro. Solved it for me.

They sell various ones for a small block. They are the same thing and fit. It just gives me that fuzzy feeling seeing the oil pressure gauge pegged all the time. So I go with the performance one.

Gotcha. Didn't know if it might've been something I did. Strange.

Probably did it all along. You just noticed since you were working on it.

Oil pressure is high when cold then when the engine is warm the oil gets hot and thinner. So at idle it goes down that is normal.

You're probably exactly right! Cool, as long as I'm ok at that psi I'm happy. I've put a ton of work into it and She runs like a top!
