Hi All
New to forum.
I have a 98 Astro, RWD, V6 Vortex, 210,000 miles.
Here is problems: Start van-starts and idles perfect. Take off right away-hesitates and ruff running-no power.
Ease off accelerator and let idle for 1 min and try to take off-hesitates on take off.
When accelerating onto highway all ok till about 1 to 3 miles then power loss.
Engine will idle ok but will sputter and cut back to idle when reved up.
Will stay like this until turned off and sit for a few minutes.
Start again and will be fine with no problems or sometimes will repeat symptoms repeatedly, then symptoms stop.
Used to happen occasionally, now happening frequently.
Happens at all fuel tank levels and on flat road as well as hills.
It could be the cat , but these distributor caps are known to cause misfires, stumbles, hesitations as there is very little ventilation in the short cap design , and they will not do well with cheap caps , need at least factory Ac delco , I prefer caps with the brass terminals as they work better & last longer; you can take van to any muffler shop and they can tell if you have a cat problem
I don't have stock radio or a code reader to pull codes.
Was told Pre and post cat sensors dead by state cert. Wasn't having this problem then.
Using AC Delco cap.
Will stop by muffler shop tomorrow. Thanks
Will post followup.

Hy all Sorry it took so long, had to work late.
Muffler shop said cat is no good and need new donut ring. Gave me an estimate of $550.00 to fix.
If I unplug exaust sensors mabye it will stop losing power? Install a universal cat ok?

It is possible that if the cat is bad and you did not get SES code then maybe the o2 sensors are bad and need changed , if cat is plugging up; the restriction will cause loss of power , even if the o2 sensors are good . you'll need to replace cat , and yea you can get a decent aftermarket cat for cheaper than 550 , replace the cat then see if you get codes , you may need to get a OBD scan to find out what condition and how good the o2 sensors are reading , you may or may not need new sensors
Thanks for the help!
I disconnected the rear sensor (after cat), runs a little rough, doesn't seem to like it much. Acceleration on highway is a little sluggish. Push the pedal down to fast, it wants to stall. Runs uneven untl higher rpm's are reached then runs smooth. Still has hesitation when starting from a full stop. Made 2 runs on the highway and no "shutdown to idle" till today. Accelerating onto highway it dropped to idle and had to be shut off. Will unplug other sensor tomorrow and see if it makes a difference.
