Pulled code 32; EGR Circuit fault

Pulled code 32; EGR Circuit fault

Postby JTalley [OP] » September 23rd 2011, 8:58pm

I have a loss of power, the engine rattles on acceleration, and it seems to run rather warm. This has been going on since shortly after I got the van and has gotten noticeably worse lately.

What do I do?

Sounds like classic EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve failure.

Our '94 lit the SES light from every cold start and gave a rattle. A couple miles down the road, the SES went out. Took longer on cold days. I wasn't excited about power either. I finally checked the code which was for the anti knock circuit. Only after I bought and read GM's driveability manual which is in addition to the service manual, did I understand that the EGR valve failed to open under acceleration causing the knock. The PCM or computer following programming set the SES light, stored the code for knock and retarded spark to protect the engine. A programmed time interval after the knock sensor stopped sending, the PCM turned off the SES, but left the timing retarded and sapped power.

After replacing the EGR with one from Advance Auto for about 130 bucks, SES and ping (rattle) gone and power back.

Hope this helps, good luck and keep us posted.

Can the valve be cleaned?

I and many here have successfully cleaned it. Mine eventually gave up the ghost. A search should reveal success stories.

On our '94, the position of the EGR valve makes it subject to pieces of carbon holding it open. In response to many Mr. Goodwrench's who sandwiched a faucet aerator screen between two gaskets, GM has a $20 EGR gasket that incorporates a stainless steel screen. You may have to tolerate a few dumb looks at the counter before they find the part number. My aftermarket replacement valve came with a standard gasket.

How would I clean it? Several searches have revealed absolutely nothing anywhere...

This is the best I can do. From the M/L Van 1994 Driveability, Emissions and Electrical Diagnosis Manual

Hope this helps, good luck and keep us posted.

I removed something that I was told is the EGR valve, and it looked like it, but there were no electrical wires. Just one vacuum line. My dad and I cleaned it, but there doesn't seem to be any affect on the performance. May have even made it worse, actually.

Without seeing it, I suspect you may have pulled the PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve. They cost around three bucks. Either way, I'm lost.

I'm guessing yours is a '92 from the posts. I'm not sure we use the same part, but I'm sure if you look up your year's EGR on an online parts retailer, the picture will show a wiring connection. Otherwise, I'll be surprised and learn something new.

BTW, I purchased the set of manuals that provided the pages I posted for thirty bucks through Amazon.com.

Good luck and please keep her on the road.

Mine's a 92. I just looked it up, and I found out that apparently mine doesn't have any wiring on it.

Also, while I still have the loss of power and some bad engine rattling, I haven't got the code 32 again since I've cleaned it.

Think I'll try and get some oil tomorrow and change it. I heard Valvoline is the best. Should I go 10W-30 or 10W-40? I think 40 would be best since the van has about 174,xxx miles on it.

Got Valvoline 10W-30 and did an oil change yesterday with an ACDelco oil filter. Reduced the rattle, but it's still there. Some more driving revealed that cleaning the EGR did help some with the performance.
