How does my spark plug look

How does my spark plug look

Postby Clayboy [OP] » June 12th 2012, 12:31am

My van is running very rough, P0300 code. Cleared it out, came back P0301, cleared it out again, P0303.

The engine only has 40k miles on it. It has sat for some time. I replaced the Distributor Cap and Rotor, they needed it.

Fuel pump and filter were also replace.

Im using the torque app on my tablet with a OBD tool and have been trying to monitor the engine to see whats wrong.

Also according to the Torque app the engines Timing Advance was running between 17 and 22 degrees.

Engine temp was about 150'F.

Vacuum is -7.88 psi, does anyone know what vacuum at idle should be?

Preignition from running to lean.
Sure looks like metal sticking to the plug in the picture.

All 6 plugs are a little white like that. As far as around the edge of the plug, its black gunk, powder, wipes right off, not metal to the best of my knowledge.

That is good. No metal. Whitish grey is a good color. Metal is bad. Disregard last transmission.

Here is a read the plugs chart.

I still lean toward it being to lean.White is lean. Which does make them miss. Tan is the perfect mixture. White is getting to lean. But that the way these vans were designed to run as lean as possible. And if they go any leaner they miss. I would be checking the O2 sensors. One wrong will make it run leaner than it supposed to. Which was to lean in the first place.

Gotta do what you gotta do with a computer. If it were a carb. One size larger jet on the primary side. 2 Bucks problem solved run smooth as a kitten tan plugs.

How many O2 sensors are on the van?

The OBD app picks up 3 sensors, one at .27 V, one at .87 V, and one at .7 V

Also the Fuel trim values are miles apart from each other,

Fuel Trim Bank One Long Term: 21.09%

Fuel Trim Bank Two Long Term: -7.03%

I have the old model I got one. I think you do have three. One in each exhaust before the cat, and one after. For some reason the bank 2 is pulling the gas out. Leaning it out. Seeing as cylinders missing are 1 and 3. I would assume bank 2 is the drivers side. Pull that O2 sensor coming from that exhaust manifold and test it. There a video on how to do it. I will find it and post again.

Chevymaher,

Thank you for the help. I hope I can figure this out. You are a great resource on this site.

I hope to test those tomorrow and report back.

Here is a couple more. One to use with a program. With live data.
Second is like the deleted one.
It is a shame the first one is gone. It was a 2 part and it was great.
