Help with engine noise - video

Postby drue [OP] » July 21st 2012, 7:44pm

Hello all. I took some video today of this engine noise I've been having. It is intermittent, can go weeks without hearing it. When it is happening it can be at different volumes. I'm about to take a bit of a trip and I want to know if it's something critical to fix. I have a feeling it has something to do with the AC compressor but I'm no mechanic. Mine is a 93' Safari. The AC does not work but the heat does.

Here's the video

Thank you so much for taking the time.

sounds like ac compressor clutch pack is on its way out bud.

we had a couple of our huskys do that and the front of the ac compressors gets realy realy hot then turns a blue colour then ours went molten red and set the airfilter piping on fire.
its the bearings in the clutch that go which is what that noise sounds like. i would either get a new clutch pack if you can or change the ac compressor its only gona get worse until it gets to the point like ours did.

on the intermitent thing i bet its making that noise when you have the ac turned on and it goes when you just use the normal heat settings. when you put ac on on the switch thats what sends the signal to the compressor to engage the clutch and pump the ac off the compressor. unless its got that bad now that it doesnt need to be on load to strain it.

Take the serp belt off and spin all the pulleys by hand, see if any make noise or have excessive resistance

it also sounds like the idler pulley bearing is shot and it rubbing against its mount, like suggested, take the belt off and turn by hand

Thanks so much for taking the time to look and listen. Using the old technique my father taught me I used a screwdriver to listen to where I think the noise is coming from. It is definitely coming from and is loudest when I held the screw driver at the green arrow. I could still hear it but It was less when I held it at the yellow arrow.

Is this the AC compressor bearings?

My main concern is will I be ok for a couple of hundred miles or is this a cancel a trip situation?

My AC settings are as follows to try and not have it run. Should I set it differently or does it matter?

"Heat" or "Vent" should keep the compressor off. If the compressor does come on, you should be able to hear it. Idle should drop for a moment.

I just went through this myself. The bearings in the compressor clutch are going out.
Not the compressor itself. It don't matter whether you run the air conditioning or not.
Mine lasted years like that I just oiled it. But when it went out. It was as was posted in a previous post. It got red hot. Locked up and the belt smoked. My air was not on when it finished it's term in office.
This was just last week.
