Strange Engine Noise Occurrence

Strange Engine Noise Occurrence

Postby castle_Rock [OP] » July 1st 2010, 4:45am

Alright,

Vehicle's been running fine, but Tuesday was when I noticed that as soon as I started the van, I could hear this odd... grinding sound coming from what appears from the engine area. When I accelerate, the sound gets louder, but when I let off the gas, the sound goes down a bit, but not enough to where I can hear the radio when its on. (it stays noisy), also, the engine doesn't make the rocking sound when you shut it off lately.

Anyone got a clue what caused this, it started on its on, I didn't mess with anything, but it just occurred Tuesday.

At first I thought it was the transmission, but I checked the driveshaft, & saw the sticker thats on the side of it, drove a couple feet, stopped, & checked it, & the sticker was gone, thinking the trans was on its way out.

This is frustrating, as Monday, I said I was going to take a road trip this weekend up North which will be a 2 hour drive, then south for 2 hours, & the dam thing wants to start acting up! :banghead:

Video would be great if you can.

Does it do it in park too if you just rev the motor? Or only get worse when you have a load on the motor?

I have had alternators that sound like a knock in the motor when the bearing is going out. One you could hear a block away.

Motor has 160k, I've put 12k on it since I've had it. Not sure if the trans was rebuilt before I got it. Will ask him when I get the chance.

Its loud in all gears, park neutral, the whole works, My camera can catch sound alright, but not great, I will either try with the camera or this PC which can record sound as well.

^OK so probably not tranny related.

Tensioner pulley usually would be loud at idle or low RPMs in drive while sitting at a light if its starting to go south. Usually......

I would pop your serpentine belt off and start the Van once. Do it when the Van is cold so you can have sometime before it would heat up from the water pump not running. That would rule out any of the accessaries causing your noise.

Checked the oil lately? Looks good? Proper level?

Now I have even a bigger headache! I was driving home from work today, and within 4 miles from being there, the odd sound I experienced before turned into a nice squeal from the engine, it started to smoke shortly afterm - sounds like the alternator has gone out. What a **** *****! - But its not all bad tho - I am parked outside of "Patty's Sugar Shack Saloon", awe, that sounds good! I will drink the squeal out of me!

so am I, from the bar to home, I just sprayed a couple spots on the belt with WD-40, it knocked the squeal out of the belt, so at least I could drive the additional 12 minutes home - It also prevented a engine fire at that. I made it safe & sound. Hip - Hip Horaay for WD-40!

The Best part about this story is the fact that he didn't have any WD40 until he went into Patty's Sugar Shack Saloon. They were giving it away as a party favor...
