1999 Astro Van - How to do a tune up?

1999 Astro Van - How to do a tune up?

Postby runrunrun [OP] » July 27th 2010, 3:56am

Any write ups?

I changed the oil, but i figuere it's time for a tune up.

On the front of the engine theres a sticker that reads timing is adjusted by the computer do not adjust timing.

So are there any write ups?

Can i get a parts list going?

I've done tune ups for older cars and such, but never for a van. It seems pretty starught forward... Plugs, wires, distibuter...

Well does my 1999 use a distributer or a coil pack??

thanks folks...

Search the site. It will provide a wealth of info. AC-Delco plugs, cap, and rotor. Wires can be Delco, Delphi, or high end performance brand. Replace the air filter and clean the MAF. Inspect/replace the PCV. Check all vacuum lines. Change the fuel filter. Inspect/Clean the throttle plate and bore.
The price of paying attention is cheap considering the alternative.

From the Chilton's manual, you've got a Distributor.
On the front of the engine theres a sticker that reads timing is adjusted by the computer do not adjust timing.
Yes, that is correct, the timing is fixed and controlled by the ECU.
So are there any write ups?
Go to here to Veiw/Download 1999 Astro Owner's Manual and, it will tell you the maintenance interval.

They pretty much have it covered. I'd also run some Lucas fuel injector cleaner through it, or a bottle of Techron injector cleaner. As for the vacuum lines, look especially careful at the long one that goes from the tree close to the MAP sensor, to the vacuum ball and A/C blend door (Basically from the driver side, top mid engine, to the passenger side firewall under the hood) That line likes to get brittle and break. DON'T use a cheapie cap and rotor, they'll leave you stranded in the near future. I had a BWD rotor glaze up in less than 3000 miles, and leave my wife stranded on the highway,I was less than amused at the $100 dollar tow bill, and the headache (you don't normally suspect new parts of failing) of finding out a 5 dollar part failed.
Don't forget to de-pressurize the fuel line before you unscrew the fittings on the fuel filter.( pull the fuel pump relay and start it, or better yet, use a fuel pressure gauge with a bleed-off button). There's plenty of info about changing spark plugs on here, to sum it up, use a wobbler and I recommend taking the front tires OFF, though you can just jack it up and securely support it on stands and work over the top of them. It's a good time to check the brakes and lube the ball joints, idler arms, etc, anyway!
Figure out the problem before buying parts
