Brake fluid leaking '02 Astro RWD

Brake fluid leaking '02 Astro RWD

Postby middleman90 [OP] » July 13th 2012, 2:22am

2002 Astro. RWD 165k
Noticed fluid on garage floor at drivers side front. After some research, I figured it was coming from under the reservoir. Not the reservoir itself but from the aluminum block that is below reservoir and booster. I assume this is a brake proportioning valve???
When standing at front of van there is a small nipple/pin on the right side of the block that "pops" out when the brake is applied. When this "pin/nipple" pops out a drip or 2 of brake fluid come out with it.
Can anyone tell me whats going on here?

I have been adding fluid to the reservoir to keep up with whats coming out.

I did front rotors and pads about a year ago. Backs need to be done soon.

Thanks for your help.

If it is your pro valve then they are about 150 dollars. I have installed new ones, not sure if that is a good idea. If it is leaking it is bad.

You have an Oring that is passing a bit of fluid. The book says that the assy is not serviceable, and believe me it ain't (at the least, it is a

ruinous process to get one apart).

Not saying that you shouldn't address the problem, you should, but if I were you, I would take a look in the JY for a good used one. One that is

off the same exact model, year, JB# brake system, etc. You don't want to be screwing around with a valve that is not ratioed correctly

for your truck.

Good hunting
