How do i know if my abs is working?

Postby Yaycandy [OP] » October 9th 2012, 11:07pm

Back of my van has a abs emblem, its a 94 astro awd ext. abs on the fuse box is in with speedometer or something and i have digital guages and they work. But when i brake hard i can tell i dont have abs. Is there a light that comes on at all when it does kick in. Antilock light or something.

Well I don't think ABS will kick in, unless your van starts sliding. Mine will kick in during a snowstorm, lock up the tires, I can hear and feel it. The ABS light on the dash will only come on if there is a problem detected with the ABS system.

If you jam on the brakes and you can stop. It probably not working. LOL.
If it engages there a heavy BBBRRRR sound and vibration in the pedal.
Pulsing the brakes. Net effect almost no real braking power. But you can sure steer well not stopping.

I tested my van against the truck in the rain the other day.
Stomped the van wheel locked a second and BBBRRRR. Came to a slow stop.
Went home got the truck which don't have anti-lock repeated on the same wet road. It stopped faster with the front wheels locked.

It was killin me to see. Okay back to reality.

Yea thats why i was asking. I was driving in the rain and came down a hill to a deadstop. Hit brakes. Bbbrrrrrr and wheel locked and threw me to a side of the road. I thought i broke something but then van drove fine. I think it warped my rotors cuz now my brakes are really thumpy and squeally. And they are still good. Maybe pads need redid

That is true. When we first got the Windstar, EVERYTIME the brake was pressed, ABS would kick in. Finally, it just stopped. I think it burnt itself out.

i have a 98 and my abs works very well if the van pulls you probably have a bad wheel sensor which is either applying abs when not needed or not applying when it is.you should be able to steer fine while under hard braking with abs. I know my abs has saved my *** more than once on wet or snowy roads. but it does scare the crap out of me every time

Is it possible for the ABS to burn itself out? On the Windstar, it would come on everytime I would brake, then one day it didn't. In the snow, it just locks up. No ABS.

could be a fuse could be wheel sensors could be control box hard to tell any number of things could make it stop working. but you said it used to come on all the time which isnt right either so i would guess controll box was going bad and then just quit

Lay on the floor on your back, knees bent. Place hands behind head. Sit up and touch elbows to knees. If youz can do dat, yer abs is working.

Yes, the the abs module can fail and cause the abs motor to run constantly and burn it out or it can stick from corrosion. It's easy to test the pump motor, the info is in this thread...

http://www.astrosafari.com/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=13496

Easy test is to supply 12v at connector, I use a motorcycle battery with test leads for this.

http://www.modulemaster.com/en/wizard/kh_325/both_lights.php
If both the ABS and brake light come on while driving, please check the following:

1) Make sure the 50A ABS fuse is good. It is located in the fuse box under the hood.

2) If you live in a snowbelt state, or where de-icing material is used on roads, your ABS pump motor could have corroded wires, especially if both lights come on after hitting a bump. First visually inspect the connection. The pump motor is located on the ABS hydraulic unit.

3) If corrosion appears on the pump wires, unplug the connector, and using a multimeter, measure the resistance of the motor. You should read low resistance (1-5 ohms). If the reistance is infinite (indicating an open circuit), the pump wires will need to be replaced.

If you are skilled with electrical repairs, you will need to open the motor and solder new wires to the brush holders and replace the connector. ModuleMaster can also repair your pump motor for you. Please call for price.

In cases where there is significant corrosion, the pump motor could be seized up (frozen). To test if the motor still runs, connect 12 volts directly to the motor connector using a pair of clip leads.
