Belt is brand new (2 weeks).

What does it mean when you have no power steering at idle, and high wine and screech at higher RPM? No fluid, right? Fluid is topped off and bleed..

Loose belt? Belt on backwards? Belt not on quite right? Wrong belt? Oily belt or pulley?

That serpent takes a lot of twists and turns in our engines. Are you triple sure you routed it correctly? Could it be missing some idler pulley somewhere?

How about the pulley? Installed all the way on the shaft? Is there a keyway and key? Is the key missing? Pulley has the right number of grooves for the belt?

re radiator fan - You need the shroud in place if you have the stock, mechanical fan.

Update: Pump is shot. What a let down.. Took belt off and spun the pump pulley and it sounds like there is a handful of marbles rolling around inside.. lol.. Definitely not a good sign.. So I will be taking it out tomorrow and returning to NAPA.

I only had one experience with PS pump replacement - for my 89 Astro.

The NAPA Cardone rebuilt pump - Appropriate fittings were not included, required removing some old fittings from my core pump. Pump case cover was misaligned, would not allow the hoses to connect. NAPA desk guy said I'd have to loosen all the connections and bolts, shift the case to the proper alignment, then retighten everything. This on a pump that they claim was test run before being offered for sale.

AutoZone - Exact same Cardone rebuilt pump. Everything aligned. All fittings included. Test run in sticker attached, dated and initialed by the tester. Even included a pully remover tool. Cost much less than the NAPA item.

As much as I'm typically a fan of parts offered by NAPA, this particular one was poo.

Update: Returned the pump and got a new one. Problem solved. Couple notes I noticed was its a good idea that while the high pressure hose is connected at the pump, disconnect the connecter at the master cylinder and hand spin the power steering pump pulley with it full of fluid. Spin until fluid starts coming out at the line to the master cylinder.. This eliminated a ton of air being introduced into the system. This was in the instructions with the pump; basically your just priming the pump.

I also did the 3 pushes on the brake, dry crank the motor, 3 pushes on the brake, dry crank on the motor, 3 pushes on the brake. This eliminated a ton of air in the system also.

Van steers like its on ice now.

I have the same problem, you should see the mess on the street where ours is parked!!. I think the power steering pump is not pumping enough pressure at idle. If I understand it correctly, The Hydroboost system runs the steering gear and the brake booster. I don't think the engine idle is too low, it sounds right. Prolly around 750 rpm warm and 1100 cold (startup) but my brakes and steering are both better when the cold high idle is kicked in, or if you touch the pedal at all. I was thinking about replacing the p.s. pump because of a leak that seems to be coming from the shaft seal behind the pulley, but was putting it off b/c of the size of the project and the weather just got REALLY cold,52 this morning when i woke up!! hehehe  I have just put it off with the idea: If the pump doesn't run dry I can mess with this later.....I guess it's later.

_brad_ wrote:Nobody? Still no steering assist/brake assist at idle. Rev up and all comes to life. I even loosened both the high pressure fitting at the master cylinder, let it bleed out, tighten, then loosened the low pressure fitting at the gear box, let it bleed out, tightened, all while motor was running and continuing to fill reservoir. I'm at a loss at this point. I have dumped prolly a gallon of PS fluid on my driveway. lol

What gives?

Did you ever find a fix to this? I sent you a PM request too.

You got mail. And to reiterate, the first pump I bought was defective. After I pulled the new pump out again and replaced it with another reman. pump, everything worked. I just happen to get a bad pump the first time around!
