Live Steam

Postby Starrshine [OP] » May 13th 2013, 2:06am

This is one of my hobbies. These miniature trains run on steam just like the real ones. I was at a friend's house yesterday running on his track. Sorry for the shaky vid

Full size or scale, I really like steam locomotives. I understand the newer diesel/electric engines are cleaner, more efficient, less maint, less operators, but I enjoy the old steam locos. That looks like a cool hobby.

My son was really into his cheap electric Thomas the train sets. I really wished he would of maintained the passion as I was almost about ready to build a huge base for a Lionel set.

(He is almost 5, now won't stop talking about mine craft)

The bug might bite him later on when he becomes old enough to appreciate a train set.

Some time ago I had this big idea for a project where I would run HO scale trains throughout the entire house by putting up 4" shelves high on the wall where there would be little openings between the walls and the train would travel the entire perimeter of the house.

Having a steam version of it would be even cooler.

So glad I'm not the only one who has thought of doing that...

The problem with running HO like that is they can be very finicky. Track gets dirty fast and you lose power. G scale seems to be a bit more forgiving. Running live steam inside

is a bit dangerous because there is a fire inside. Not to mention steam and oil coming out of the stack! That can get ya in serious trouble with the missus :)

I've thought of that too. Lol.
Used to work at red robin in abbotsford. They had one suspended from the roof that went through the restaurant. Until a drunk bartender wanted to see how fast it would go. Luckily it was an easy fix. But when that train broke down. There went the equipment repair budget for the month.
