According to the news article behind it, the game called "Stadium Events" was included in the package and its a highly sought after game in most NES cult circles. This auction went as high as it did is because the game was still in the original box.

From what I remember as a video game clerk back in those days, it was a game that nobody was really excited about. Everyone wanted Super Mario Bros., Mike Tyson's Punch Out, and anything else that was in the video arcade. Nintendo had the Power Pad, which essentially was the Wii but it was ahead of it's time. I think there were only 2 games that were compatible with the Power Pad. There was a fitness game and then there was Stadium Events where you ran in place on the pad. We all thought that was silly and so nobody bought the game OR the Power Pad.

So to avoid going back too far in time to where I start showing my age, I can sum it up by saying that because those kinds of games didn't catch on, not a lot of copies were produced. And those who had the game as part of their NES package probably didn't know where it was after about a month or so.

My daughter read that story and immediately wanted to sell the NES she has. Yes, she has one and loves Donkey Kong. But unfortunately she doesn't that the Stadium Game.

Between you and me.. and the 47,000 other people on the internet, I don't believe that she really sold it for that much money. I think that it was an experiment that got way out of hand so she probably had a friend on the other side of the country to outbid the highest bidder at any cost.

It's a knock-off that they sell to unwitting parents, grandparents and anyone else who doesn't know anything about the game systems but want to give one as a gift. All of the games ROMs are programmed on to one chip and its permanently built into one cartridge. You get similar looking games and characters. Rather than the game being "Super Mario" it's actually "Super Marino" where it features a character wearing coveralls and holding a wrench to make Grandma think that this is what the child wants.

The newer version of this has the ROMs built directly into the hand held controller so the only thing you get are the controllers and the cable to connect it to the TV. I'm sure that it's always been possible to do it this way with the way that electronics can be miniaturized but they stood to make more money by having people come back every other week to spend $40-$50 on a new game.

I have a "Swedish" super nes too (real Nintendo), and they don´t look the same. This one I got from Germany.
