235/15/75 Spare Under Van?

235/15/75 Spare Under Van?

Postby Abstrakted [OP] » June 14th 2017, 3:30am

All,

I was wondering if anyone knows offhand if a 235/15/75 wheel/tire will fit underneath my Safari where the current spare tire is. I have an AWD and need to be sure I can pack the right size.

Thx!

I don't think so. The space-saver spare is pretty tight in that compartment. Crawl under and take some measurements or just test fit one. Besides not fitting, diameter wise, a full size tire will hang down a lot lower then the original spare.
If there is a spare there already I wouldn't worry about it. It's just a spare, it should only need to get you to a service station. As long as it can do that a full size tire is not necessary.

You can NOT drive an AWD van on a mis-matched spare... YOU WILL GET WHEEL BIND AND DAMAGE TO THE TRANSFER CASE!

If you have no choice using a mismatched spare in an emergency... BE SURE TO UNPLUG THE AWD FUSE!!! This will ensure the encoder does NOT engage. There will however, still be some friction (minimized but possibly still damaging) in the transfer case.

This spare tire subject has been talked about before... I'm pretty sure you CAN get a larger full-sized spare tire up there.. just unsure how big.

Others may chime in...

Do you have a trailer hitch? With most Astro trailer hitches you have to ditch the full size spare and go with a compact spare.

Before I built my swing out tire carrier I briefly had a 31'' tire stuffed up there in between my hitch. its snug, but easily fit. So your tire will fit no problem.

Thanks guys. much obliged, I'll go get this tire mounted on a wheel and stick it up there.

Any recommendations on a trailer hitch?. I have to do that too before I leave for Oregon this summer.
TurnNBurn, I see you are in Bend. I'll be rolling through there on my way to PDX in Mid-July..:)

Turn,

I will certainly do that. I'm from Eugene/PDX but haven't been home to Oregon in quite a while, and unsuprisingly, SF is getting me down. Expensive, hectic, and increasingly dangerous+boring :(.

I've talked the bosses into a Work From Home situation for the whole summer and plan to travel and live in the van if I can get her ship-shape.

Wow, it Must depend on the hitch. I used to work at a hitch shop and there where a lot of vans and suv's that you had to ditch the full size spare for the hitch. Maybe the revised the hitches. I wouldn't be too happy to give up my full sized spare just to add a hitch.lol

235 75 16 and a stock hitch under the batvan, plenty of room.

I recommend a trip to the junk yard to get a stock hitch over any after market stuff. It's a lot cheaper and literally made to fit your van. Yours is already setup to take it and it's a pretty easy job.

Fair Nuff. I'll start cruising PickNPullz. Does a hitch from any year work on my 2000?

How can you tell if it is a stock hitch or aftermarket in the junk yard? I doubt there would be any labels left on the hitch. The reason I want to know is I have a hitch on my 97 Astro and I would like to know if it is a aftermarket or OEM. No labels on mine and it has surface rust. I want to R & R it and repaint it.
