Below is a copy of a post I made on S10 forum. I am posting it here because the Astros/Safaris had similar motor-trans setup and could experience similar problems. And, I have gotten good tech advice here before.
The victim: 93 S10 ex cab 2wd 4.3l Z Automatic (4l60?/700R4?) motor and trans supposedly rebuilt @ 200K.
currently has 277K miles.
My situation: If I hit the gas quickly, from a start, the Ignition/Gauges fuse blows, the truck goes into limp mode , all gauges are lost, power sucks, and fuel consumption is terrible, "lights on" alarm sounds when lights are on with engine on. I have to pull over and change the fuse right away but engine does not stall. one time I kept driving for 10 miles and when I pulled over the battery had been sucked dry, and I needed a jump start after new fuse. drove 12 more miles and battery recharged ok.
If I ease into the gas until I'm over 20 to 25 mph, I can stomp the crap out of it and the fuse won't blow. It seems to shift ok all the way up to highway speed.
If I stomp it at 30 to 35 mph, it kicks down from 3 into 2 and hauls ***, no problem. :driving:
I can rev it up all I want, any way I want in neutral or park and the fuse wont blow.
I am getting 13 to 15 mpg. Not good for 90% highway travel in a V6 under 65 mph. (3460 lbs. with me in it, I'm 215)
The tires on the back are too tall. (235/75-15) probably responsible for -2 mpg. front has 235/60-15.
I don't know what transmission I've got. I think it's a 4L60, but maybe a 700R4. Not sure when GM switched. how do I tell? ( I know, there's probably a sticky on that...)
Stock rear (3.42 open)
OBD I (no codes)
My dad says 4 speed automatics have 2 shift solenoids (1-2, and 3-4) and actually start in 2nd gear unless you stomp it. it sounded to him like the 1-2 solenoid was bad, and sending 12V+ to ground when stomped and shares a circuit with the gauges.
Any body have similar experience, or know GM auto transmissions?
Can someone confirm my dad's theory?
Local shop with 6 technicians, a $15000 diagnostic computer and a week with a 20 year old truck could not figure it out...( cost me$100. I'm still pissed about that)
They thought it was a injector wire pinched in the air cleaner...nope. :whack:
