Trans fluid dip stick seems to be stuck!

Trans fluid dip stick seems to be stuck!

Postby Mo Bettah [OP] » March 29th 2012, 4:28pm

I wanted to check my fluid level but I can't get the dip stick out. I don't want to twist it or pull it too hard and the handle breaks off or something. I can only get it out enough to see the beginning of the stopper. Any suggestions?

Can you get under the van and visualize the tube that holds the dip stick? That tube may have slipped out of it's mounting hole a bit. The end of the dipstick is shaped like a "Z". That bent Z shape may be hanging up on the end of the tube, or the trans case.

Is it about time to change your ATF filter anyway? If it is, drop the pan and see what the heck's hanging it up.

The red lever must be pulled up in order to release the tension on the bung, twist the bung gently until it loosens.

Then you should be able to pull it out. It is basically made similar to a bilge plug in a boat. When you are done, insert

the dip stick and push the red lever to apply the sealing feature.

Good luck

Really? There's a locking thing on some dipsticks? I've never seen that on any of my cars.

As long as it is and the bends and twists in the dip stick as well as the tube, it might just be in there in a bad way. You could un blot the dip stick tube and pull the whole works out and then you would be able to fudge it around from the bottom end and maybe get it freed up without fear of breaking the handle off.

Yours looks like the red one or very close to it right?
